Kehta hai dil mastaanaa

Posted on: February 27, 2011

The lyrics of this song are provided by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I have discussed two songs from a movie called “Aankh Michauli” (1962). It turns out that there was another movie of the same name that was released one decade later. This movie, “Aankh Michauli” (1972) had Rakesh Roshan, Bharti, Om Prakash, Kamini Kaushal, Jagdeep, Farida Jalaal, Joginder, Purnima etc. in it.

During the time of the earlier movie of this name, Shankar Jaikishan were the undisputed Kings among music director, but things had changed dramatically by the time the new movie of the same name was released. Kishore Kumar as a playback singer and R D Burman as a music director had become the hottest properties in their respective fields. Their dominance was so total that Kishore Kumar was the male singers most in demand. As for the music direction, other music directors were forced to change their music compositions to make them sound like R D Burman’s music. And even then, not too many of the older generation music directors survived R D Burman’s juggernaut.

I had heard this song during its time. It was one of those songs of that time that I loved a lot though I had no idea about any details of this song. I heard this song as long as it was played on loudspeakers and radio and then forgot all about it till I was reminded of this song again by Sudhir. Now, thanks to him, I am better informed about this song. This song, which is sung by Kishore kumar, is picturised on Rakesh Roshan and Bharati. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music. One can clearly see that Shankar Jaikishan- the biggest music directors before the R D Burman era, have tried to come up with a composition that sounded like an R B Burman composition. In fact, those days I actually thought that this song was an R D Burman composition.

Song-Kehta hai dil mastaanaa (Aankh Michauli) (1972) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

kehta hai dil mastaana
ho jaa kisi ka deewaana
arre pyaar ke sahaare
do jahaan se aage
chhota sa banaa len aashiyaana
kehta hai dil mastaana
ho jaa kisi ka deewaana
arre pyaar ke sahaare
do jahaan se aage
chhota sa banaa le aashiyaana
kehta hai dil mastaana

dil mein jo pyaar na basaaya
to jeene ka mazaa kya aaya
dil mein jo pyaar na basaaya
to jeene ka mazaa kya aaya
zindagi ye faani hai
chhoti si kahaani hai
yeh rut aani jaani aani jaani hai
kehta hai dil mastaana
ho jaa kisi ka deewaana
arre pyaar ke sahaare
do jahaan se aage
chhota sa banaa le aashiyaana
kehta hai dil mastaana

preet ke jo haar na piroye
to anmol din yoonn hi khoye
preet ke jo haar na piroye
to anmol din yoon hi khoye
ghadi tal jaayegi
jawaani dhal jaayegi
to kali aarzoo ki jal jaayegi
kehta hai dil mastaana
ho jaa kisi ka deewaana
arre pyaar ke sahaare
do jahaan se aage
chhota sa banaa le aashiyaana
kehta hai dil mastaana

duniya mein jab hum aaye
to pyaar bhara dil saath laaye
duniya mein jab hum aaye
to pyaar bhara dil saath laaye
baag ye bahaar se hai
zindagi pyaar se hai
dil ko waasta to bas yaar se hai
kehta hai dil mastaana
ho jaa kisi ka deewaana
arre pyaar ke sahaare
do jahaan se aage
chhota sa banaa len aashiyaana
kehta hai dil mastaana
ho jaa kisi ka deewaana
arre pyaar ke sahaare
do jahaan se aage
chhota sa banaa len aashiyaana
kehta hai dil mastaana

What kind of a dress is that? I do not remember such dresses being in vogue at that time, or maybe they hadn’t come to my part of the world – thank God for that! Yes, definitely SJ were copying RDB’s style!

Thanks for the song, Atul, and Sudhir for the lyrics!
