Ik baar agar tu kah de

Posted on: March 22, 2011

“Malhaar” (1951) is quite a musical blockbuster of its time which firmly established Roshan’s credentials as a high quality music director.

Though the musical team of this movie (singers, lyricist, music director) are household names, the same cannot be said about the lead actors of this movie. The lead actors of this movie were Arjun and Shammi. Shammi,an actress not to be confused with the actor Shammi Kapoor (though I am aware of sites that confuse between the two 🙂 ), later played bit roles as an elderly aunt for several decades.

Here is a duet song from “Malhaar” (1951). It is sung by Mukesh and Lata. Mukesh’s voice never sounded this sweet. I find this song reminiscent of the Mukesh song Kyun pheri nazar which is a song from “Andaaz” 91949) but excluded from the movie.

The song is picturised on arjun and Shammi. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Roshan.

It is a lovely song from this musical extravaganza called “Malhaar” (1951).

Lyrics

ik baar agar tu kah de
ik baar agar tu kah de
tu hai meri ki main hoon teraa
ham do albele panchhi
ham do albele panchhi
ham donon kaa ek baseraa

do dil dhadke hain
chaunk uthi hain jawaaniyaan
kuchh kahaa hai nigaahon ne
chhed ke pyaar ki kahaaniyaan
kuchh kahaa hai nigaahon ne
chhed ke pyaar ki kahaaniyaan
meraa man hi nahin hai mere bas mein
meraa man hi nahin hai mere bas mein
ye kisne jaadu pheraa
kaho jee ye kisne jaadu pheraa
ham donon kaa ek baseraa

suno jee,
ye jag hai badaa luteraa
ham donon kaa ek baseraa
aahaa haa haa
haa haa haa
haa haa haa haa

dekho aayi hain sitaaron ki timtimaati toliyaan
chalo inki chhaanv mein ham
khelen aankh michauliyaan
chalo inki chhaanv mein ham
khelen aankh michauliyaan
tootey na kabhi jeewan bhar
tootey na kabhi jeewan bhar
ye bandhan teraa meraa
ho ho jee
ye bandhan teraa meraa
ham dono ka ek basere
ek baar agar tu kah de
ek baar agar tu kah de
tu hai meri ki main hoon teraa
aahaa haa haa
haahaa haa
aa haa haa
haa haa haa haa
hmm hmm hmm

Thanks for posting this gem.

Even after musical blockbuster like “Baawre Nain” by Kidar Sharma (Khayalon mein kisi ke, Sun bairi Balam, teri duniya main dil) & “Malhaar” by Mukesh (Dil tujhe dia tha, Bade armaann se rakha hai balam, Taraa toote duniya dekhe, garjat barsat bheezat aayo re), Roshan had to struggle. Both movies failed at box office.

We are lucky that he go second run in “Barsaat Ki Raat”. Btw, Rohan reused “Garzat barsat bheezat aayo re” in “Barsat Ke Raat” (as “Garzat barsat sawan aayo re”).

Sidji

It is true that both these songs have the same tunes but that from Malhar is a traditional song whereas the other is penned by Sahir. Also the former is sung by only Lataji while the latter by herself alongwith Kamal Barot.
This movie was advertised under the caption ” Mukesh and Mangeshkar Means Most Melodious Music in Malhar” – nice play on the letter M.

The singer in Barsaat ki Raat for Garjat …is not Lataji but Suman Kalyanpur with Kamal Barot. Both these songs are available in this blog under Garjat Barsat …(Barsaat Ki Raat).
