Aa main bataaun tu hai kyaa

Posted on: April 11, 2011

“Barsaat Ki Raat” (1964) was a movie that only had qawwalis in it, and the movie, riding on these qawwalis went to to become an all time hit movie. Inspired by the success of this movie, a B grade movie maker tried to emulate the movie by making another movie on the same theme. This movie maker in fact went one step ahead and named his movie “Qawwali ki raat”! What an inspired title ! 🙂

“Barsaat Ki Raat” had big names like Bharat Bhushan, Madhubala etc. The B grade movie maker could not afford such big names, so he signed up the then B grade actors viz Deven Verma and Mumtaz. As for music direction, he signed up Iqbal Qureshi. Now I have mentioned that even B grade movies of those days used to have A grade music. And this movie was no exception. Though box officewise, the movie failed to be in the same league as “Barsaat Ki Raat”,its songs are wonderful songs and worth listening to on their own merit.

I have already discussed two qawwali from this movie. Here is another qawwali. This qawwali is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Shewan Rizvi is the lyricist.

This qawwali, which grows up on you after listening to it a few times, has been picturised on Deven Verma, Mumtaz and others. This song is not sung while being seated on a stage, but it is picturised as a dance song, where the qawwali singers are dancing while singing this song.

Here is this nice qawwali from “Qawwali Ki Raat” (1964).

Song-Aa main bataaun tu hai kyaa (Qawwaali Ki Raat) (1964) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shewan Rizvi, MD-Iqbal Qureshi

Lyrics

aa main bataaun tu hai kyaa

aa main bataaun tu hai kyaa
sirf nazar ka hai dhokhaa
samjha hai mujhko utna hi
jisko jitna zarf milaa
aa main bataaun tu hai kyaa
sirf nazar ka hai dhokhaa

mausam hoon main saawan ka
guncha hoon main gulshan ka
guncha hoon main gulshan ka
sundarta pe naaz na kar
roop hai tera do din ka
roop hai tera do din ka
baat kahi to baat bhi sun
yaar hai tu bhi matlab ka
aa main bataaun tu hai kyaa
sirf nazar ka hai dhokhaa
samjha hai mujhko utna hi
jisko jitna zarf milaa
aa main bataaun tu hai kyaa
sirf nazar ka hai dhokhaa

meri mast nigaahon ne
kaam diyaa hai saaghar ka
kaam diyaa hai saaghar ka
meri mast nigaahon ne
kaam diyaa hai saaghar ka
kaam diyaa hai saaghar ka
mast huaa bejaam ke main
naam liyaa jab saaqi ka
naam liyaa jab saaqi ka
dekh liyaa jab saaqi ko
hosh ganwaayaa baaqi ka
aa main bataaun tu hai kyaa
sirf nazar ka hai dhokhaa

zulfon ko tu baadal jaanaa
aankh ko samjha maikhaanaa
akl setu hai begaanaa
deewaan hai deewaana
deewaan hai deewaana
deewaan hai deewaana
tere liye deewaana banaa
aur tu hi kahe hai deewaanaa
tere liye deewaana banaa
aur tu hi kahe hai deewaanaa
meri iss ruswaayi mein
tera bhi hai afsaanaa
deewaana hai deewaana
deewaana hai deewaana
deewaana hai deewaana
deewaana hai deewaana
ho ho ho
ho ho
baat pate ki kehtaa hoon
shauq se kahle deewaanaa
shauq se kahle deewaanaa
deewaana hai deewaana
deewaana hai deewaana
deewaana hai deewaana
deewaana hai deewaana
deewaana hai deewaana
deewaana hai deewaana
ho ho ho
yoon na udaati chal aanchal
deewaane se bach ke chal
nikla hai na niklegaa
zulf ka kham aur mera bal
yoon na udaati chal aanchal
deewaane se bach ke chal
nikla hai na niklegaa
zulf ka kham aur mera bal
aa main bataaun tu hai kyaa
sirf nazar ka hai dhokhaa
samjha hai mujhko utna hi
jisko jitna zarf milaa
aa main bataaun tu hai kyaa
sirf nazar ka hai dhokhaa

I was somewhat confused by your assertion that Barsaat Ki Raat had only qawwalis in it. How would you describe the classical Garjat barsat sawan ayo re by Suman Kalyanpur and Kamal Barot, or the usual romantic songs like Rafi’s Maine shaayad tumhe pahle bhi kahin dekha hai, Mayoos to hun vade se tere, Zindagi bhar nahin bhoolegi wo barsaat ki raat (also sung by Lata Mangeshkar), Lata Mangeshkar’s Mujhe mil gaya bahana teri deed ka etc.

Qawwali KI Raat did indeed have a good number of qawwali type songs, one which I particularly like is Husnwale husn ka anjaam dekh.
