Pyaar banke mujhpe koi chhaa gayaa

Posted on: April 13, 2011

1947, when India gained its independence and the country was partitioned was a period of transition as well as momentous changes in the Hindi movies and its music. Many big names of music world had departed from the scene and new artists were taking their place.

Among female singers, Noorjahaan had gone to the newly created Pakistan and the field of female playback singing was open, though Suraiyya was one of the bigger names who was still in contention. Lata Mangeshkar was yet to come to her own. Some of the senior female singers , viz Shamshad Begam, Zohrabai Ambalewali, Amitrbai Karnataki etc were still around.

Lalita Dewoolkar was also one of the female playback singers active in 1940s.

I have discussed a few songs of Lata Dewoolkar in this blog already. Here is another song sung by her. This song is from “Vidya” (1948). The song is picturised on Cuckoo who is shown singing and dancing in the presence of a few guests/visitors.

This song is written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. Music is composed by S D Burman. This is a nice and lovely song to listen to (and watch).

PS- Lalita Dewoolkar married music director Sudhir Phadke in late 1940s and settled down to domestic bliss. That is the reason why she vanished from the playback scene in late 1940s.

Song-Pyaar banke mujh pe koi chaa gayaa (Vidya) (1948) Singer-Lalita Dewoolkar, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-S D Burman

Some information on Lalita Deulkar(spelt in various formations):
Before taking up singing,Lalita had acted in Films.(Bombay Talkies’ Nirmala,Durga,Bhabhi and Navjeevan). She sang a duet in Navjeevan,But C.Ramchandra gave her first solo song in Filmistan’s Saajan.
She sang in 60 films as Playback Singer.
When she got married to Sudhir Phadke in 1949 at Pune,Mohammed Rafi sang the “mangalashtaka”(a must in Maharashtrian Marriages). It was translated in Hindi and Rafi rehersed it many times before singing on the wedding Day.
Though she stopped singing after marriage, still she gave one song in 1950.
She died on 25.5.2010(Sudhir Phadke died in 2002).

I could understand some prejudice against acting after marriage, but play back singing is not the same thing. Another contributory factor could have been that was the year when Lata Mangeshkar stormed the music scene with everlasting songs with all the great music directors of the time, demolishing all competition in its wake. I have written on this phenomenon in my blog at
Lata Mangeshkar vs Noorjehan
