This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor to this blog.

Sheesh Mahal is a movie by Sohrab Modi from 1950. Sohrab Modi has presented a series of very powerful and very well made movies, which include both historical epics (Sikander, Pukar, Jhansi Ki Rani, Prithvi Vallabh, Mirza Ghalib, Nauserwan-e-Adil, Raaj Hatth etc.) and contemporary social dramas (Kundan, Meetthaa Zeher, Talaaq, Jailor etc.) Sheesh Mahal belongs to the latter category of his productions.

This movie is a story about how with changing times, destinies of people change. Some will weather the change with flexibility and maturity, and will be successful in maintaining their social values. Some others also weather such changes, but on the basis of their pride and unbending principles, which at times led to undesirable stress and fragmentation in life and family.

Thakur Jaspal Singh (Sohrab Modi) is a proud scion of a Rajput family with a long lineage of illustrious ancestors. He is a philanthropist, with a touch of arrogance and inflexible view of principles in a changing social order. Circumstantially, he falls on hard times, and is forced to auction his ancestral villa, Sheesh Mahal. He makes a living as a painter, and his children are also forced to find work, much to his dislike. Ranjana (Naseem Bano) is his daughter, and she finds work as a teacher / caretaker for a young girl Roopa (Nigar Sultana). Roopa is the daughter of Seth Durga Prasad (Mubarak), the rich man who has purchased the ancestral villa of Thakur Jaspal Singh. So, ironically, Ranjana is forced to work as a hired help in the same home where she used to be the ‘chhoti maalkin’. Roopa is getting romantically involved with Sundermukh (Pran), who was earlier the fiancé of Ranjana, when the family was rich and owned the Sheesh Mahal.

In this song, Ranjana is making an effort to dissuade Roopa from getting into a romantic involvement, although not disclosing that she knows the person from before. The lyrics of this song are written by Shums Lucknavi, and the melodious composition is by Vasant Desai.Enjoy this interesting song, which is also a piece of advice for the young hearts to stay away from reckless involvements.

Song-Zehar khaanaa magar dil lagaanaa nahin (Sheeshmahal) (1950) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Shams Lucknowi, MD-Vasant Desai

Lyrics

zehar khaanaa
magar dil lagaanaa nahin
husn waalon ki
husn waalon ki galiyon
mein jaana nahin
zehar khaanaa
zehar khaanaa
magar dil lagaanaa nahin
husn waalon ki

ye nazar par chadha kar
giraa detey hain
ye nazar par chadha kar
giraa detey hain
ek sapna samajh kar
bhulaa detey hain
ek sapna samajh kar
bhulaa detey hain
inki ulfat ke
inki ulfat ke fande mein aana nahin
zehar khaanaa
zehar khaanaa
magar dil lagaanaa nahin
husn waalon ki

meetthi baaten sunaa kar
banaate hain ye
zakhmee dil
zakhmee dil dekh kar
muskuraate hain ye
shamma ki tareh
shamma ki tareh
dil ko jalaanaa nahin
zehar khaanaa
zehar khaanaa
magar dil lagaanaa nahin
husn waalon ki

ghar hazaaron hain
inke bigaade huye
ghar hazaaron hain
inke bigaade huye
baag laakhon hain
inkey ujaade huye
baag laakhon hain
inkey ujaade huye
jo pataa unka
jo pataa unka koi thhikaanaa nahin
zehar khaanaa
zehar khaanaa
magar dil lagaanaa nahin
husn waalon ki
husn waalon ki galiyon
mein jaana nahin
zehar khaanaa
zehar khaanaa
magar dil lagaanaa nahin
husn waalon ki
