Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ham apne dard ka kisaa sunaaye jaate hain

Posted on: May 19, 2011

Here is a wonderful song that I discovered just now. To be honest I had discovered it some one year back but I had not listened to it and then I had forgotten all about it. Just now I listened to this song and I was amazed at how modern this song sounds even today, even though it is a song from as far back as 1942.

This song is from “Muqabala” (1942). Youtube link suggests that Khan Mastana is the actor, singer as well as the music director of this song. earthmusic site mentions the name of singer as Srinivas Kale, though, and mentions the lyricist as A Karim.

For the time being, I am treating the information of earthmusic as more authentic, though both earthmusic as well as youtube can be inaccurate.
PS-The singer is Khan Mastana. I thank Sudhir for doing the necessary research in this matter.

Here is this fantastic song from a forgotten movie called “Muqabala” (1942) which apparently had actors like Agha, Fearless Nadi, Jal Khambata, Yaakoob etc.

Song-Ham apne dard ka kissa sunaaye jaate hain (Muqaablaa) (1942) Singer-Khan Mastana, Lyrics-A Karim, MD-Khan Mastana

Lyrics

aa aa
aa aa aa aa
ham apne dard ka kissa sunaaye jaate hain
ham apne dard ka kissa sunaaye jaate hain

ham apne dard ka kissa sunaaye jaate hain
haan
wo hans rahe hain ham aansoo bahaaye jaate hain
wo hans rahe hain ham aansoo bahaaye jaate hain
taras rahe hain idhar
idhar ham to dekhne ke liye
taras rahe hain idhar
idhar ham to dekhne ke liye
hain
udhar wo chehre ko apne chhupaaye jaate hain
udhar wo chehre ko apne chhupaaye jaate hain
mujhe mitaa ke bhi
chhoda na unki ulfat ne
haan
mujhe mitaa ke bhi
chhoda na unki ulfat ne
bhula rahaa hoon magar
yaad aaye jaate hain
bhula rahaa hoon magar
yaad aaye jaate hain

aaa aaa
pilaa ke phir unhen
behosh kar de ae saaqi
pilaa ke phir unhen
behosh kar de ae saaqi
ke hosh mein tere deewaane aaye jaate hain
ke hosh mein tere deewaane aaye jaate hain
ham apne dard ka kissa sunaaye jaate hain
wo hans rahe hain ham aansoo bahaaye jaate hain

Atul ji,

With reference to the details about the this song, as per the record label and Geet Kosh, this song is sung by Khan Mastana. The music is also composed by him. The lyrics are by A Karim.

Srinivas has sung two other songs in this movie, both of them duets with, Rajni, one of the actors in this same movie.

Atul ji,
I remember this movie, because it was one of those few movies where double role was used.It was a novelty in those days.
Directed by Babubhai Mistry,it was the last movie of Nadia for Wadia Movietone( it became Basant Pictures afterwards, for financial reasons).
She had a double role of twin sisters: good Madhuri and bad Rita.
Rita is kidnapped by the villain and made into a Night club singer, while Rai Bahadur brings up good Madhuri.
Nadia was appreciated much for the preformance contrast for both roles.
This film was First in India to use Split-screen method for double roles, where both sisters could cross each others, shake hands and talk together. The other attraction was the Night club set, which,in case of police Raid, could be converted in respeceted residence in few minutes. It was a great fun to watch these two things.
A happy ending picture, but to see and hear the laboured hindi dialogues of Madhuri(good Nadia) was another treat.

What a beautiful voice! I have heard at least 3-4 times now. Loved his rendition immensely. This may be one of the rare instances when the actor on whom the song is picturised is the singer-music director as well.

It is a pity that a talented ‘fankaar’ (artist) of the caliber of Hafeez Khan Mastana was neglected by the Hindi film industry. MD Babul got ‘inspired’ from the tune of the mukhda of this song and used in ‘naseeb hogaa mera meharbaan khabhi na khabhi’ from FORTY DAYS (1959).

Atul,
I have one suggestion to make. I find that Hafeez Khan has been tagged under different names such as ‘Hafeez Ali Khan’,’Hafeez Khan’ ‘Khan Mastana’. Why not club all these names under HAFEEZ KHAN to properly reflect number of songs he composed under one head?

Are Hafeez Khan and Khan Mastana one and the same ? If so, then I will definitely merge them together.

Yes, they are the same according to http://www.shahidparvezkhan.com/gharana.html

Please read the paragraph under the heading ‘Ustad Hafeez Khan’.

By the way, Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is a well known sitarist and son of Ustad Aziz Khan ( MD of a few Hindi films under the name Aziz Hindi) and nephew of Hafeez Khan.

Atul ji,
Yes.Hafiz Khan and Khan Mastana are same.
Born in 1917,his family shifted to Hyderabad. He learnt sitar at a neighbour’s place without father’s knowledge. He was fond of singing also.He did 4 singing programs on Hyderabad Radio, without father’s knowledge and with that money, ran away to Bombay .He was MD Meer Sahib’s asst. His first break came in Bahadur Kissan-1938 when he sang a song’Balam Gaye Pardes’.There was no looking back after that.
He acted, sang and gave music to films. He joined Minerva MT,where he gave music First time in VASIYAT-1940.
He gave music to films like Talak,Jailor,Panghat,Sikander, verginiya,Akela, cicus ki sundari, mere sajan, muqabla, raja rani, badalati duniya,Rahgeer,Raja,Talaash,Neelam,Badmash,Taxi driver, shaeed etc.His last film as MD was Jawani ki Hawa-52.
Then he went to Hyderabad to meet father. When he came back, everything had changed and he stopped getting work.Bad days came. After 7 years,he got 1 song in Nek Khatoon. In 1971,he made his last stage appearance.
He died penniless, unsung, unwept in a room in a Mahim Chawl on 6-3-72.His last rites were delayed as money had to be collected as charity.
In his heydays.he had owned 5 luxury flats in Bombay.
In MD Rafiq Gaznavi and Pt.Gobindram’s LAILA MAJNU Khan Mastana was the main singer and Mohd.Rafi was in the chorus. When the luck changed,in K.Asif’s LAILA MAJNU,Mohd.Rafi was the main singer and khan Mastana was in the chorus !
When he sang first time in Bahadur Kisan for Mir Sahib, looking at his jolly nature Mir Sahib gave him the name KHAN MASTANA and Hafiz Khan was known as Khan Mastana thereafter.
