Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Andhe ki laathhi tu hi hai

Posted on: May 24, 2011

When I look at the statistics for the blog, I find that there have been 13 singers,13 lyricists and 15 music directors who have completed their individual centuries of songs. Among the list of non centurions, I notice four music directors and three lyricists who have 50 + songs to their credits in the blog at present and they are next in line for their individual centuries. But when I look at the list of singers, I find that the singers who are closest to 100 songs mark are in their twenties and thirtees. K L Saigal is the closest to 100 and he is at 34. Next are Usha Mangeshkar, C Ramchandra, Amirbai Karnataki and Meena Kapoor.

I would dearly love to see all these singers notch up their individual centuries in the blog. It is still far far away as of now, but I will truly rejoice the day this blog has 100 songs of K L Saigal.

I think I should take make a conscious effort to disuss one K L Saigal song daily. That way, it may take a couple of months for K L Saigal to reach the milestone.

“Dhoop Chhaaon” (1935) had some nice songs in it that have become legendary among lovers of old music. I have in fact already discussed two such songs from this movie, though they were non K L Saigal songs.

Here is a K L Saigal song from this movie. I recall listening to this song in my younger days and getting amused not only at the singing style but also at the lyrics (“andhe ki laathhi”). But now I realise that it is a superb song from a movie that is a milestone in the history of Hindi movies.

Here is this timeless classic from “Dhoop Chhaaon”(1935). It is written by Pt Sudarshan and music is composed by R C Boral

Song-Andhe ki laathi tu hi hai (Dhoop Chhaaon) (1935) Singer-K L Saigal, Lyrics-Pt Sudarshan, MD-R C Boral

Lyrics

aaa aaa
dil ke phaphole jal uthhe
seene ke daag se
is ghar ko aag lag gayi
ghar ke chiraag se

andhe ki laathi tu hi hai,
tu hi jeewan ujiyaaraa hai
andhe ki laathi tu hi hai,
tu hi jeewan ujiyaaraa hai
tu hi aakar sambhaal Prabhu
teraa hi ek sahaaraa hai
tu hi aakar sambhaal Prabhu
teraa hi ek sahaaraa hai
andhe ki laathi tu hi hai,
tu hi jeewan ujiyaaraa hai
andhe ki laathi tu hi hai,
tu hi jeewan ujiyaaraa hai

dukh dard ki gathdi sar par hai
pag-pag par girne kaa dar hai
dukh dard ki gathdi sar par hai
pag-pag par girne kaa dar hai
Parmeshwar ab path raakh tu hi
Parmeshwar ab path raakh tu hi
tu hi path raakhanhaaraa hai
tu hi path raakhanhaaraa hai
andhe ki laathi tu hi hai,
tu hi jeewan ujiyaaraa

jin par aashaa thi
chhod gaye
baaloo ke gharonde
phod gaye
munh mod gaye,
man tod gaye
munh mod gaye,
man tod gaye
ab jag mein kaun hamaaraa hai
ab jag mein kaun hamaaraa hai
ab jag mein kaun hamaaraa hai
andhe ki laathi tu hi hai,
tu hi jeewan ujiyaaraa

Atul ji,
The film Dhoop Chhaon aka Bhagyachakra(1935) was the first movie in which Playback singing was introduced first time thru’ a chorus song. The film had music by R.C.Boral AND Pankaj Mullick.
The film had a very impressive cast of those days:
Vishwanath Bhaduri,Bikram Kapoor,K.C.Dey,Umashashi,Ajmat Bibi,Kidar Sharma,Pahadi Sanyal,Indu Mukherji,Trilok Kapoor,Sardar Akhtar etc. K.L.Saigal DID NOT act in it.
There were 10 songs in it,5 of them of K.C.Dey as follows-
Baba man ki ankhen khol
Teri gathari mein laga chor
Aaj mero ghar aayo Mohan
Jeevean ka sukh and
Andhe ki laathi
The last two songs were recorded by K.L.Saigal as version songs.
The film had the original songs of K.C.Dey only.
One more interesting episode about the film. The idea of playback singing though initially opposed by Director Nitin Bose, later he tried to take the credit for it by claiming that it was world’s first attempt by him.In the dispute,Nitin left the production house and never directed any film for them after that.
The main point remains that this song by KLSaigal is not the original film song.It is a version song only.

KL Sehgal sang this song with ease. He was superb in evoking emotions through his leisure style of singing.

It seems not many people have taken note of the couplet in the beginning of the song. I remember that it was extremely popular and over-used by the street sellers or ‘majmebaz’, sellers of manjan, chooran or some kind of oil to attract the prospective customers in the western U.P. in the forties of the 20th century. I always thought that the couplet might belong to one of the Parsee dramas which were overflowing with such couplets. I could go up to Aagha Hashra whose couplets were very popular among the people. It could never strike me that a Hindi poet like Sudarshanji could write such a couplet which is a perfect example of Urdu Poetry, a jewel with no flaw whatever. As I grew up, I came to know that like Prem Chand Pt. Sudarshan also came to Hindi via Urdu. You cannot write a couplet of this purity unless you have complete command over Urdu language.

P.S
Is it for the first time in the history of film lyrics that a couplet, unrelated to the main content of the song is given as a prelude to the song? I am not sure but with the help of more knowledgeable people I would like to know. Later it became a vogue, but 1935 is early days and if so Pt. jee must be given the credit to be the pioneer.
