Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Baagon mein koyal boli

Posted on: June 6, 2011

Though I was aware of a movie called “Ishaaraa” (1964), I was not aware that another movie of the same name was released in 1940s too.

Here is a rare song from “Ishaaraa” (1943). It is a duet sung by Suraiyya and Satish. D N Madhok is the lyricist. Music is composed by Khursheed Anwar.

I am not familiar with this movie too. So I request my knowledgeable readers to throw light on this movie.

PS-Now I know, thanks to information provided by Mr. Khwaja Sultan Ahmad, a regular of this blog and the younger brother of Khursheed Anwar that “Ishaara” (1943) was the first movie where Suraiyya got to act as the leading lady and sang songs for herself. Prior to this movie, she was giving playback for other actresses.

This song has a solo version too which is sung by Suraiyya and picturised on herself. Mr Khwaja Sultan Ahmad has kindly uploaded the solo version of this song which is extremely rare. Now I have provided links as well as lyrics for both the versions of this special song.

Atul ji,
ISHARA(1943) was a DRD Prduction, directed by J.K.Nanda and Music was by Khwaja Khursheed Anwar.
The film had a cast of Prithviraj Kapoor,Suraiya,Satish Batra,Swarnalata,K.N.Singh,Jagdish Sethi,Pratima,Vatsala etc.
The story was of 2 brothers, elder being the kind and guiding spirit to the younger bad and wayward brother who does not heed to the several Isharas of the elder one.
Ishara was the first hindi film of Khwaja Khursheed Anwar. He was also the producer of this film.
K.K.Anwar was a very respected and talented music director of his times.Roshan and Shankar were his chelas.Naushad had great opinion of him.KKA was a Gold medal winner of Philosophy in his M.A.exam.
He migrated to Pakistan in 1952 and gave a new life to its film industry. He was awarded highest honour in Pakistan for his musical services.Even India awarded him the MMIM(mortal men-immortal melodies)award in 1983.
He died on 30-10-1984 at Lahore.

Film ISHARA was produced by D.R.D.Wadia .Khurshid Anwar was not one of the producers. The story of the film was based on the English novel of Dewan Sharar titled ” Gong of Shiva ” It was about allowing a Hindu widow to remarry, a controversial subject at that time.I can add much more but suffice for the present.

Hereunder are the missing words/lines of this song;-

sun kar yeh mast sadaayen
dali par phul khil aayen
lo ankh kali ne kholi
mere dil—-

There is a small correction. Instead of Jab pal mein koyal gaaye is Jab bun mein koyal gaaye
