Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Biyaahi mori raani hawaldaar ke sang

Posted on: June 6, 2011

I am back from the place where electricity and internet, (among many basic things in life) were at a premium. Hopefully I will be able to catch up with lost time. Just imagine being able to discuss just 18 songs in a week !

Here is a lovely song from “Parwaanaa” (1947) which I had never heard before. This is a lighthearted wedding song, where the sahelis of the bride are singing this song. The bride is getting married to a hawaldaar (a police official- obviously a big man for ordinary folks), and in this song the ladies tease the bride about this fact.

D N Madhok is the lyricist. Khursheed Anwar is the music director. There are quite a few voices in this song, but I am unable to identify them. I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify these voices.
PS-Based on a comment on youtube, as well as my own ears, I think that the singers are Rajkumari and Geeta Dutt. Derubala says that Anil Biswas is the music director of this song (as Khursheed Anwar had left the movie and gone to the newly created Pakistan). Indeed this is a song that may not be known to those who have not watched the movie since its records were not created.

PS-The voice is Meena Kapoor’s and not Geeta Dutt’s as brought out in the comments.

Song-Biyaahi mori rani hawaldaar ke sang (Parwaana) (1947) Singers-Rajkumari, Meena Kapoor, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Khursheed Anwar

Lyrics

zara lachkaake
zara balkhaake
zara matkaake

biyaahi mori rani hawaldaar ke sang
ho biyaahi mori rani hawaldaar ke sang
hawaldaar ke sang
o thaanedaar ke sang
hawaldaar ke sang
o thaanedaar ke sang
biyaahi mori rani hawaldaar ke sang
o biyaahi mori rani hawaldaar ke sang

bhauyen hain kamaan teri
palken teri dhaalen hain
bhauyen hain kamaan teri
palken teri dhaalen hain
sunte hain sainyyan tere bade dilwaale hain
sunte hain sainyyan tere bade dilwaale hain
palbhar mein sulah hogi palbhar mein jang
palbhar mein sulah hogi palbhar mein jang
biyaahi mori rani
biyaahi mori gori
biyaahi mori rani hawaldaar ke sang
o biyaahi mori rani hawaldaar ke sang

ghoonghat ki ot mein sharmaa ke dolti
ghoonghat ki ot mein sharmaa ke dolti
nainon se haule haule jaane kyaa hai bolti
nainon se haule haule jaane kyaa hai bolti
bol tere hriday mein kyaa hai umang
bol tere hriday mein kyaa hai umang
biyaahi mori rani
biyaahi mori guiyaan
biyaahi mori rani hawaldaar ke sang
biyaahi mori rani hawaldaar ke sang

dole mein baithh gori sasuraal jaayegi
dole mein baithh gori sasuraal jaayegi
sainyya ke dil pe apna sikka jamaayegi
sainyya ke dil pe apna sikka jamaayegi
ye dil ko lubhaane waale tere saare dhang
ye dil ko lubhaane waale tere saare dhang
biyaahi mori rani
biyaahi mori gori
biyaahi mori guiyaan
biyaahi mori banno
biyaahi mori rani hawaldaar ke sang

Atul ji,

Welcome back. 🙂

Rgds
Sudhir

Thanks. I am happy to be back. 🙂

Atul ji,
We are happy that you have returned to your familiar surroundings once again.
PARWANA(1947) was the last movie of K.L.Saigal.
The cast included Saigal,Suraiya,K.N.Singh,Nazir etc.Baby Khurshid(who later became Shyama) did saigal’s sister’s role in it.
There were 4 saigal songs,4 suraiya songs and also one very melodious Rajkumari song in it,additionally.
In this movie Saigal dies at the end and unfortunately Saigal really died in Jan 1947,just before the film was released !

this time Khurshid Anwar had returned to Lahore (this would be early April 1947). So the producer has replaced Anil Biswas with this song. This song shot hurriedly and added it. Of course, no record was issued and no revised booklets were issued.
The singers of this marraige song are: Rajkumari and Meena Kapoor. Some say it’s Geeta Dutt voice. But since Anil da made this song in hurry…so must be Meena Ji.

Atul ji/derubala ji

khursheed Anwar migrated to Pakistan only in 1952.
In 1947,his 3 films were screened: Parwana,Pagdundi and Aaj aur kal.
Further in 1949,he gave music to Singaar and won an award too.
In 1950,his Nishana and in 1952 Neelam Pari were released.
Since 1947,all films where he gave music to, were also produced by him-which means he was quite active till 1952.
May be,KKA left for Lahore in early 1947, for some personal work,as all his family was in Lahore;but he must have come back immediately.Meanwhile this above song must have been done by Anil Biswas.
Though KKA migrated to Pakistan in 1952,his first film as a Music Director was his Magnum Opus film INTEZAAR in 1956 (also produced and written by him).
Note- please also refer to my comments on the song “bagon me koyal boli” on 6.6.2011(i.e.yesterday),for additional info. on KKA(Khwaja Khursheed Anwar).

This song was added after the release of movie. It is correct that Khurshid Anwar had returned to Lahore to meet his family when Parwana was released. but was stuck-up due to riots. In the meantime it was realised that there was a long gap between the start of the movie and the first song’Toot gaye sab sapne mere’.This song was recorded and picturised hurriedly and added in his absence.Anilda had very kindly agreed to compose this song at the request of Khurshid Anwar.

Khwaja Sultan Ahmad
youhger brother of the late khwaja Khurshid Anwar.

Thanks a lot for this insider information.

You are the younger brother of Khwaja Kurshid Anwar ! We are fortunate and privileged to have you among us in this blog. I have noticed that you have uploaded a couple of rare Sajjad Hussain songs on youtube. I will discuss those songs too in the coming days. I request you to share the other rare compositions of that era too with us.

Khwaja Sultan Ahmad ji,
It is a great pleasure to know that we are communicating with a close relative of someone who was not only a legend in the Indian subcontinent music field while he was alive but also remembered most reveredly even now.
We look forward to some facts and correcdtions in our informations to add to our knowledge.

Atul ji,
Recently I came accross a discussion in RMIM on the above song.
In this,Mr.Surjit Singh says that he spoke to Irfan Anwar, son of late Khursheed Anwar, the original MD of Parwana. He told more or less the same story what Mr.Sultan Ahmed ji has said.
Mr.Surjit Singh ji confirms that the voices are that of Rajkumari and Meena Kapoor.
