Maine chaand dekhaa hai

Posted on: June 23, 2011

Most movies that are released come to the notice of movie going public, whether or not they actually go to the movie halls to watch these movies.

Then there are some movies which are like stealth bombers that one reads about in American magazines which escape detection and fail to register on the radars.

“Wo Din Yaad Karo” (1971) was very much a stealth bomber in the sense that it remained undetected and bombed at the box office. In a year when I was very much clued in on movies, I frankly never heard or read about this movie.

Now, some four decades later, I have become aware of this movie. This movie had Sanjay Khan and Nanda in lead roles. Sanjay Khan in lead role ! Now I know why this movie ended up like this in a year that saw several hugely successful movies from several actors as long as their name was not Sanjay Khan.

Like the movie itself, even its songs failed to become popular. The reason for that was different, though. Kishore Kumar had taken the playback singing world by storm by that time and other playback singers were left to fight for small pieces of the playback singing pie. So much so that a singer of the calibre of Rafi was almost eclipsed for a year during those days, before he began to make a comeback.

Now, with the benefit of hindsight, we realise that the quality of output given by Rafi and others had remained the same as before, it is just that the public taste had undergone a transformation.

Here is a party song from “Wo din Yaad Karo” (1971). It is sung by Rafi. It is picturised as a piano cum get together song. Sanjay Khan is shown seated at a grand piano, singing this song for Nanda, who naturally feels embarassed at this public expression of love by the hero for her.

The song is written by Anand Bakshi and the song is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

So, here is this song from “Wo Din Yaad Karo” (1971) which, believe it or not, I had never heard before till recently.

Song-Maine chaand dekha hai (Wo Din Yaad Karo) ( 1971) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi,MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

maine chaand dekha hai
maine chaand dekha hai
maine chaand dekha hai
maine chaand dekha hai
jhilmilaate sitaaron mein
koi phool dekha hai
koi phool dekha hai
muskuraati bahaaron mein
maine chaand dekhaa hai

aisa khwaab dekha hai
jo kisise nahin milta
ek gulaab dekha hai
jo kahin pe nahin khilta
ik haseen dekha hai
ik haseen dekha hai
ek hai jo hazaaron mein
maine chaand dekha hai

apne shokh haathon se
usne ghoonghat banaayaa hai
apna roop ghoonghat mein
usne aise chhupaayaa hai
jaise chaand chhupta hai
jaise chaand chhupta hai
baadlon ki kataaron mein
maine chaand dekha hai

sun lo beqaraari ka
ye fasaanaa jahaan waalon
keh lo shauk se mujhko
tum deewaana jahaan waalon
likh lo naam mera bhi
likh lo naam mera bhi
aaj se beqaraaron mein
maine chaand dekha hai
maine chaand dekha hai
jhilmilaate sitaaron mein
maine chaand dekha hai

Thank you Atuljee, for adding this song. Yesterday I was listening another song with same “mukhra” – Maine Chaand Dekha Hain, but it was duet of Rafi Saab and Latajee; initially I thought it’s from same movie, duet version. But, it was actually from movie Zabak (1961). You have already shared 3 songs from Zabak. If possible, add this one also.

With great regards, …….. Tirthankar
