Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Sun man ke meet more prem geet

Posted on: June 28, 2011

Most nice songs usually become popular. Or is it really so ? There is much legwork involved before the songs of a movie can become popular. The movie, as well as its songs need to arouse the curiosity of public before their release. For that the movie and its songs need to be marketed. In case the movie has saleable stars and the movie is made by a well known production house with deep pockets, then the songs of that movie stand a good chance of being heard.

In case the movie is being made by small time movie makers on a shoe string budget and with unknown names then the chances of the movie seeing the light of the day are not bright. The same goes for the music of such movies.

It is seen that majority of small budget movies, especially those that are made on off beat topics fail at the box office. Their music, however nice it may be, also fail to find patrons.

For every successful movie and its music, there are many unsuccessful movies and music. In some cases, songs of flop movies could turn out to be popular.

When it comes to small budget movies, their songs mostly fail to find buyers. As a result, very few copies of these songs are made and sold. With less demand, such songs fail to reach the ears of public and are soon forgotten.

“Mrigtrishna” (1975) had the word FLOP writ large on it. The movie was as boring as it could be. It had actors like Rakesh Pandey, Yogeeta Bali, Dina Pathak etc whom nobody in his/her right mind would pay to watch. And then the story of the movie itself was as dull as they could make it for ordinary public.

The fact that the movie makers of this movie lacked finances meant that they did not hire a big name music director. They hired a music director called Shambhu Sen, and he also doubled as the lyricist of the movie.

The music of this movie was unexpectedly nice, but then the failure of the movie came in the way of its songs. The songs were heard a few times on radio and loudspeakers and that was that. The songs of this movie were forgotten for the next few decades.

Now, thanks to internet and affordable means of distribution of music, it is possible for music lovers to search for old forgotten music and savour them. And the music of “Mrigtrishna” (1975) richly deserves to be re discovered and heard and savoured.

Here is a song from “Mrig Trishna” (1975). It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Yogita Bali in a palace. This is a “calling the beloved” genre of song which is written by Shambhu Sen. Music is also composed by Shambhu Sen.

The picturisation also shows a man whom I guess to be Rakesh Pandey. Dina Pathak is also visible briefly.

Here is this superb song from “Mrig Trishna” (1975). Its lyrics are sent to me by Prakashchandra. This song, which he gets to listen to once in six months or so on Vividh Bharati, either in Chhayaageet programme or in “Chitrapat Sangeet ” programme, is a wondeful song. Listening to this song can certainly brighten one’s day. Now hopefully we will be able to listen to this song anytime we feel the need to brighten our lives. 🙂

Thanks Atulji, for giving space to this song,

This song must have been picturised in real PALACE, can anyone know in which PALACE, this song was picturised ?

Further, I want to know about the music director SHAMBHUSENji, if anyone know about him, Please throw light upon the facts about him.

This Film got 2 or 3 more melodious musical compositions in it.Among them the famous and the popular one is “Navkalpana navroop se rachna rachi jab naar ki”,picturised beautifully as Hemamaliniji`s Court room dance song(sung beautifully by Mohammed Rafiji)

Atul ji,
The film was a flop but it had some enchanting music-like Prakashchandra ji has mentioned.
The best of the lot, ofcourse was “Nav kalpana nav roop se” by Mohd.Rafi.It was composed in Raag Kalyaan with Roopak Taal. This was filmed on Hema Malini, but her name was not mentioned in the credits of the film.
Further,Mehadi Hasan recorded his first song in Hindi in India,in this film .The song was’Aas ka jhoota”.
There was one more song “Navbala ras…” sung by Madan Sen,in Raag Pooriya.

Prakashchandra ji,
SHAMBHU SEN was born in 1936 in earstwhile east Bengal. He developed interest in music and Dance from childhood and attained proficiency in both by the age of 24.
He came to Bombay and started working as assistant to many bengali Music Directors, without sticking to any one.Meanwhile he worked as choreographer also in some films, but his main interest was Music. He went on many foreigh tours.
He could give music to only 2 films,Mrig Trishna(1975) and Banno(1987),both eminently flops.
However his next generation was luckier than him.He was the father of Sameer Sen(of the Dilip sen-Sameer sen composer duo).Even his grandson Sohail sen is a Music Director(Sirf, what’s your Raashi etc.)
Shambhu Sen published 4 private albums of Music which were reasonably successful.(I have heard his album-Hindi songs on Mouth organ and liked it very much).
Shambhu Sen died at the age of 62,on 13-1-1998.
He was the Guru of Neeraja Pandit(wife of social activist Ashok Pandit from Jammu) who has become a popular singer of TV and Movies.

Atul ji,
MRIG TRISHNA was produced by Nahata Films and Directed by Rajendranath Shukla. The (terrible) story,Screenplay and Dialogues were done by R.N.Shukla and Tanveer Farooqui. The then famous TV personality KAMALESHWAR helped them in Dialogues.
The story of Mrigtrishna was the cause of its failure at the box office. It revolved around two brothers, one potter and the other Farmer, who lived next to a dilapidated palace. They start seeing weird illusions, hear dance and music. The potter meets with strange encounters and loses his wife.
In reality, there is a gang of dacoits who are using the palace for their activities. The leader of the gang rapes the Farmer’s wife, who goes away with her husband. Finally, police catch up with the screenplay and the viewer is spared.
No wonder the film flopped.
Prakashchandra ji,
Some dances and songs were shot in the Jaipur Palaces.

What a wonderful post! I knew the song, nothing more and today I have the lyrics and the story of this movie. Thank you, Prakashchandraji, Deshmukhji and Atulji. The one Rafi song, Nav kalpana, got considerable air time on the radio and the above post too. If one of the characters in the film is a potter, the song which begins with Kabir’s doha, Maati kahe is so fitting. Reading the story, it felt as if a promising plot was not given good treatment.
