Shaheedon tumko mera salaam

Posted on: August 15, 2011

This aricle is written by Sudhir,a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor to this blog.

Greetings to all, on the 64th anniversary of Independence. A day to be remembered. And more than the day, it is important to remember those who laid down their lives to make this freedom possible.

This song is to honor and pay homage to all those brave men and women of India, who took to the streets and defied the oppressive rule of the British power. They sacrificed their personal comforts, the comforts of their loved ones and their family, they sacrificed their careers and other pursuits and some even made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.

This song is from the film Bazaar, released in 1949. Produced under the banner of Madhukar Pictures, and directed by Amarnath, this film has an impressive star cast that includes Nigar Sultana, Shyam, Yakub, Gope, Badri Prasad, Cuckoo, Amir Banu, etc. The story of this film revolves around the world of theatre. A rich theatre owner (Yakub), a famous heroine (Nigar) and a struggling young actor with a golden voice (Shyam). The efforts of the young actor to break into the top levels of theatre-dom, the romantic involvement with the famous heroine, the competitor in terms of the rich theatre owner, and one can play out the rest of predictable drama. This theme seems to have caught the fancy of both the industry and the audience, for this theme has been reworked many times since. Notable repeats and variants are Albela (Bhagwan, Geeta Bali, 1951), Naya Andaz (Kishore, Meena Kumari, 1956) that immediately come to mind.

Lyrics for Bazaar are by Qamar Jalaalabaadi, and the music compositions are by Shyam Sundar. Shyam Sundar is another of those very talented music directors, who was very much underutilized in the industry.

The words and the music is very simple and touching. Rafi Saab has rendered this song so very simply, and yet, there is a tingle that runs down the spine, as one listens to it. Besides the moving lyrics, the only assertive element in this song is the sound of a drum beat that is a constant underpinning of this song. The song is remembering the various small and big sacrifices that the freedom fighters made in their fight against the foreign power.

In remembrance, lest we should forget.
