One more addition to the long list of songs for selling – this time it is another general merchant shop on a thhelaa.
Nateeja (1969) is a film I am not very familiar with, except that it is a social drama of the cops and robbers type. The film is produced by Jugal Kishore, under the banner of Jugal Productions, Bombay and is directed by Rajesh Nanda. The star line up for this film includes Vinod Khanna, Bindu, KN Singh, Jaishree T, Mehmood Junior, Satish etc. Both Vinod and Bindu were starting their careers in the industry – this would be one of the few initial films where she has the role of the leading lady.
The lyrics of this film are written by Asad Bhopli and Salim Saagar, and the music is composed by Usha Khanna. This particular song is written by Salim Saagar. The location for the song appears to the Chowpatty beach in Bombay. The video clip show a road side shop-on-wheels on a tthela, which is being pushed by the actor Jugal Kishore (I am quite certain, but would definitely like to be corrected if I am wrong). Prancing along with him are two kids, trying to keep pace with the tthela. The elder of the two kids is Mehmood Junior, the child comedian who made a success of imitating Mehmood and his mannerisms on the screen. I am not able to identify the younger girl child with him – she seems familiar but I am not able to place her name. The singing voices are those of Rafi Saab and Usha Khanna herself – she is singing for Mehmood Jr.
Enjoy this song of road side traders and wonder – would they be making any money, the way they are singing and mis-handling their own wares. 🙂

Lyrics
hum albele saudaagar
chhoti si dukaan sajaa kar
hum albele saudaagar
chhoti si dukaan sajaa kar
Dilli ke bazaar se aaye
nai niraali cheezen laaye
bechte hain raste mein
raste ka maal saste mein
bechte hain raste mein
raste ka maal saste mein
har cheez milegi badhiyaa
kuchh lete jaao baabu
har cheez milegi badhiyaa
kuchh lete jaao baabu
bazaar se keemat kam hai
jo chaaho khareedo baabu
oonchi dukaan ka to
pheekaa pakwaan hai
sachcha hai maal apnaa
sachchee zubaan hai
bechte hain raste mein
raste ka maal saste mein
bechte hain raste mein
raste ka maal saste mein
main chhotaa sa paalish waalaa
kuchh meri bhi sewa lenaa
sheeshe ki tareh jooton ko
chamkaa’un to paise denaa
yaaron ki baat maano
paise bachaao
paalish ki ek dibiyaa
ghar lete jaao
bechte hain raste mein
raste ka maal saste mein
bechte hain raste mein
raste ka maal saste mein
ye choodiyaan ye jhumke
ye saari banaaras waali
ye choodiyaan je jhumke
ye saari banaaras waali
sab lete jaao baabu
khush ho jaaye gharwaali
roothhe mehboob ko jo chaaho manaanaa
apni dukaan par tum sang le ke aanaa
bechte hain raste mein
raste ka maal saste mein
bechte hain raste mein
raste ka maal saste mein
hum albele saudaagar
chhoti si dukaan sajaa kar
hum albele saudaagar
chhoti si dukaan sajaa kar
Dilli ke bazaar se aaye
nai niraali cheezen laaye
bechte hain raste mein
raste ka maal saste mein
bechte hain raste mein
raste ka maal saste mein

Sudhir ji,
NATEEJA(1969) was a Jugal production film produced by Jugal kishore and as was his wont,he also acted in this film,in an important role.In the above song he is there with Jr.Mehmood.
I remember having seen this movie.
Vinod is a habitual thief and steals own wife’s jewellery on wedding night and runs away.Bindu comes to Bombay searching for him and is waylaid by goons of Ranjit(KNSingh)-Vinod’s boss.At that time Kishore (Jugal kishore) and an orphan Mehmood(Jr.Mehmood) drop in and save her.Bindu recognises Kishore as her long lost brother and tells him her story.Kishore assures her and they convert Bindu into an ultra-modern girl in few days.
Vinod comes from jail and falls in Bindu’s love wanting to marry her.Kishore reveals her true identity. But now Ranjit also wants Bindu. He murders Kishore and Vinod is arrested and sentenced 7 yr’s jail.He escapes and takes his revenge, exposes Ranjit and lives happily and straight with Bindu for ever.

Arun ji,
Thanks again, for the background information on the film. So it is more a gangster film than a cops-and-robbers film, that I had presumed.

I have this film without subtitles which makes it hard for me to follow—thank you so much for that synopsis, it will help a lot 😀
