Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Muhammad Shah rangeeley re

Posted on: November 1, 2011

There was a movie called “Nadir Shah” about which hardly any information seems to be available. Some sites mentions it as movie of 1958 and other sites as a movie of 1968.

From the little that I have been able to gather about this movie, this was an Amarjeet production movie. From the picturisation of the songs in this movie, it would appear that the movie is from 1958, but I find that some reliable sources mention it as a movie of 1968.So for the time being, I will regard this as a movie of 1968, even though it does not appear so to me.

Here is this lovely song from “Nadir Shah” (1968). It is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Rafi. The song is picturised as a dance song on Minu Mumtaz and other female dancers. The song addresses Muhammad Shah, the decadent Mughal Emperor at that time who was more interested in the good things of life that administration, which earned him the nickname “Rangeela”. In this song, he is addressed as such, and he responds in Rafi’s voice.

Personally I doubt that Muhammad Shah was addressed as “Rangeela” in his presence, but then this is a Hindi movie and taking such poetic licenses is nothing new for Hindi movies.

I wonder who plays Muhammad Shah Rangeela. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actor lip syncing in Rafi’s voice.

The song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Music is composed by S N Tripathi.

I became aware of this song recently when Raja drew my attention to this song. I agree with Raja that this song, which (like him), I heard for the first time, is a lovely song to listen to, and it is just the kind of song that belongs here in this blog.

PS-This picturised version of this song was sung by Suman Kalyapur and Rafi, whereas the gramophone record version was sung by Lata and Rafi.

Atul ji,
NADIR SHAH(1968) was produced, directed and music was also provided by S.N.Tripathi.
The story is set in the last half of 17th century India, when the mughals indulged in Song/dance and the finer arts intead of ruling the country efficientlyThats why India has always been a target for northwest invaders in search of Gold and riches, about which India was so famous.
Muhammed Shah was such a Mughal Emperor who prided himself in being called ‘Rangeela’ to denote his love for song and dance.
Same time in the Northwest of India Nadirshah became very powerful and usurped the throne of Iran.he needed money,so he decided to invade and loot india.Nadir Shah(Shaikh Mukhtar) hatched a plan.He sent his son Salim(Firoz Khan) for one year in India to get info about Muhammed Shah(Vishi Kapoor) and his wealth.Salim comes and falls in love with the mughal princess Shah Bano(Naaz).
Nadir shah invades India, starts looting and throws Rangila Emperor Muhammed Shah away. There is chaos in India. But few indians get together and revolt against Nadir Shah.
Salim is also against his father.Ultimately Nadir Shah is hounded out of India and Salim sits on India’s throne with Shah Bano.

Arunkumarji,

With my meagre knowledge of old faces, I feel role of Muhammad Shah Rangeele was played by P Kailash and not by Vishi Kapoor.
Open to correction !!

Got a bit busy the last couple of days (and did not have access to internet either), so could not visit the site.

Thanks so much for posting this song, Atul.
Lovely song, isn’t it? When I heard it for the first time a few days back, I was amazed at how I’d not heard such a lovely song before. And also humbled. Glad you liked it too. This is indeed the type of song that needs to be better-known. And what better way than through this blog? 🙂

Dear Atul ji ,,
It is very surprising to note that in the Youtube and in your fabulous
blog, every where name of Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd.Rafi are mentioned as singers of this loving song, but Lata Mangeshkar did not sung even a single song in this movie, actually this song has been sang by Suman Kalyanpur and Mohd.Rafi
Here is the link for your reference, please watch the title song of the movie..

“JANG INSAANIYAT KI DUSHMAN”BY MANNA DEY,M.D:S.N TRPATHI-“NADIR SHAH-1
Thanks for sharing this amazing rare gem ..
Have a blessed day ,

Uday ji,
Thanks for raising this point again.
Actually both of us are right.
I had seen the credits(and also the entire film) earlier also.
It is true that in the film,Lata has not got a single song.
But then for commercial records, she sang the same songs, hence on the records her name is indicated.Such things are quite frequent
and as a HFM lover, even you must be aware of such incidents in many other films.
The song which is posted here above,is a video clip and hence it depicts a song sung by Rafi and SUMAN KALYANPUR and I request Atul ji,to make the appropriate corrections in the credits here .
The info from HFGK,given here by me,indicates the songs on Records and NOT in the film.
I hope the matter is quite clear now.

The film titles only mention Rafi, Suman and Asha in that Order…no mention of Manna Dey, Lata and Mubarak or Shyama Hemmady…title song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor but no mention of his name in titles….
