Chidiyaan choon choon kartin hain

Posted on: November 15, 2011

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Just saw the response from Peevesie’s Mom for the song Ital ke ghal mein teetal) from “Bahuraani” (1963) . And I remembered, the film Jyoti (1981) is almost a frame to frame remake of the film Bahurani (1963), with Jeetendra playing the role played by Guru Dutt, Hema Malini that of Mala Sinha, Vijendra Ghatge that of Feroze Khan, Shashikala that of Lalita Pawar, Ashok Kumar that of Nazir Hussain, and Deven Verma that of Mukri.

And the song that Peevesie’s Mom requests is exactly the same situation as the song “Ital Ke Ghal Mein Teetal” from Bahurani. A mentally retarded Jeetendra is singing this song with his animal and bird friends. In the film Bahurani, Guru Dutt plays with toy animals and sings that song. In this film, Jeetendra is playing with real birds and animals, some roaming free and some in cages. Seems that the step mother is too tolerant of her retarded step son, for stupendous amounts of money would be required to put together this menagerie that includes elephants and camels and horses and bears and monkeys and lion and cheetah, and bevy of birds of all varieties, some really rare and expensive. Well, but that is film world.

The story line is just a copy of the earlier film, so I am also making a copy of the synopsis from the previous write up with names of actors replaced, and some minor changes. 🙂

The storyline goes like this. Ashok Kumar is a rich landlord in a village. He has lost his first wife, and has one son from her. This son in Jeetendra. He marries again, and the second wife is played by Shashikala. She also has a son, role played by Vijendra Ghatge. In a fit of spite, Shashikala establishes the practice of feeding Jeetendra a small portion of opium every day. The result of this diet is that although Jeetendra grows up into a young man, his mental age doesn’t go beyond a child of four or five. Vijendra Ghatge, his step brother, on the other hand, has grown up to be a normal young man, both physically and mentally. Shashikala plays this trick just to ensure that at the time of inheritance, everything may be given to her son, and nothing for her step son. This is the starting point of the film. Ashok Kumar, being impressed by Hema Malini resistance to Vijendra’s cruelty to villagers, requests her father (Om Shivpuri) for Hema’s hand in marriage to his son Vijendra. Shashikala strongly objects and suggests that Hema should be married to Jeetendra instead. The rest of the film is about how Heme Malini takes up this situation as a challenge, takes Jeetendra off the opium diet, and over a period of time, nurses him to a normal grown up person, who is well read, has high morals and ethics, and becomes the savior of all in the family including his step mother and step brother.

The song appears near the beginning of the film, as Jeetendra is celebrating his birthday along with his four legged and winged friends. One can also see Deven Verma in the clip, playing the role of household attendant, and helping Jeetendra to feed all the friends.

The lyrics of this song are by Anand Bakshi, and the music is by Bappi Lahiri. The singing voice is that of Kishore Kumar.

(Whew, that did not take long !!! 😀 )

chidiyaan choon choon karti hain
totey taali bajaate hain
ye sab mere saathi hain
mil kar shor machaate hain
ki bol-chhe bol-chhe ki
happy birthday to me

The sparrows are chirping away merrily
And the parrots are accompanying with clapping
All of them are my friends
All are regaling together making a lot of noise
And you know, what are they saying
They are wishing me a Happy Birthday

mera janam din, sab ne manaayaa
bhaaloo bhi aayaa, kaaloo bhi aayaa
hatt jaao sab raste se
jungle ke raajaa aate hain

All are celebrating my birthday today
My dear friend, the black bear is also here
And hey, just clear the way
King of the jungle is coming this way

ye kitne sunder, ye kitne pyaare
aise kyun nahin insaan saare
ye bandar insaanon ki
dekho hansi udaate hain

Look at these animal and bird friends of mine
How sweet and lovable they are
Oh why can’t humans be so friendly
See, the monkey is laughing
He is surely making fun of humans

is hirni ko sab, kehte hain seeta
hai ram haathi, raavan ye cheetah
in ko apne naamon se
kyun sab log bulaate hain

This deer here is named Seeta,
And this elephant, his name is Ram
And here is cheetah, his name is Raavan
O pray why people don’t call them by names
Why do they have to call them animals?
