Main albeli rumjhum baaje ghoonghar

Posted on: November 19, 2011

There are some actors in Hindi movies who are so badly typedcast that it is rare to see or imagine them in roles different from the ones for which they are well known. For instance, Nimmi is perceived to be an actress who is always dealt a rough deal by the fate. Not just I, even some regulars are of the same view. For example, one regular, while sending me the lyrics of a song picturised on Nimmi informed me that he could detect a faint smile on Nimmi’s face in the pcturisation. I watched that song several times in super slow motion to witness the rare occurence.

That song was towards the fag end of Nimmi’s career. But here I have come across a song from the early days of Nimmi’s career, and I am really surprised to see Nimmi singing and dancing and looking happy in this song. 🙂 What was the world coming to those days ? Fortunately, normalcy was soon restored. 😉

Here is this song which is sung by Lata. the song is picturised on Nimmi and Premnath. One can also see Kishore Sahu in the picturisation.

Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Atul ji,
You are right about typecasting Artists in indian films. The viewer goes to the movie with that impression and expectation only. For example,a Kishore kumar movie must have comedy,Nimmy must cry,K.N.Singh must plot sinisterly,Dara singh must play Kushti,Nadia must do stunts,Nurjehan must sing and Sulochana must suffer etc etc.
However when such’ typecasted’ artists do something different, either the movie flops or is ignored.Rarely,if the Artist is powerful, then it clicks, like Pran’s role in film Upkar. But it requires courage on the part of the director and the Artist himself.
Though the image of Nimmi has always been,a wronged one,the most unfortunate or the eternal sufferer in the films, yet she did try going against this image atleast once !
Nimmi was paired with Kishore Kumar in ‘Daal mein Kaala’-1964,which was a comedy of mistaken identity(I have written about it earlier in this blog, dont remember when) and one can see Nimmi laughing-Yes sir, laughing and giggling too-in this film. However it must be pointed out that to make Nimmi comfortable with her established image, there were few scenes of her, crying, sobbing and being sad also.

Yes, I had mentioned that Nimmi was once cast in a happy role towards the fag end of her career. “Daal Mein Kaala” was the movie in my mind while discussing this fact.
