Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Bas yahi apraadh main har baar karta hoon

Posted on: November 29, 2011

“Pehchaan” (1970) is a movie that was produced and directed by Sohanlal Kanwar. The movie had Manoj Kumar, Babita, Balraj Sahni,Sunder, Sailesh Kumar, Chand Usmani, Tiwari,Sulochana, Asit Sen, Mohan Choti, Daisy Irani, Lata Bose, Madhui Apte, C. S. Dubey etc in it.

The songs of this movie were quite hummable and extremely popular, especially among pre teens like me. Listening to a song like Wo pari kahan se laaun was a source of great amusement for kids of my age, which I am sure was not what was intended by the makers of the song.

The song under discussion was another nice songs though it was more a song for grown up minds. And growing up mentally is easier said than done. One finds that many present day music lovers take perverse pleasure in interpreting the word “aadmi” in this song to mean “man” whereas it is intended to me “humankind” and accordingly the lyrics of the song are being interpreted in a way that it was not intended.

The lyrics basically means- “I commit the same sin repeatedly, viz I love my fellow human beings.” The lyrics are not intended to mean that “I am a man and I love men”.

This superb song is sung by Mukesh with his customary midas touch. The song is picturised on Manoj Kumar.Neeraj is the lyricist and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Mrs Bhatt.

Atulji, I agree with you. I recall that this song was laughed at often because of the “aadmi hoon aadmi se pyar karta hoon” line. I did not know neeraj was the lyricist, btw he is one of my favorite lyricists. Too bad that he could not deal with the political environment in Bollywood where sycophancy rules the roost.
I recall that the song – Woh Pari Kaha Se Laoon, Teri Dulhan Jise Banoo was sung by Babita and Kumud Chuggani. Or am I right? Because Kumud Chuggani’s name is missing from the credits.

Kumud was from the Wadala- Antop Hill belt and studied in Sitaram Prakash High School, Wadala. Despite good looks and being appreciated for her dance by none other than Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, she made a bad start in a Kishore Sahu non starter called – Poonam Ki Raat which did no good to her career. Soo she had to play second fiddle to heroines like Mumtaz (Shararat, Sanjay Khan was the hero), Resham Ki Dori (Dharmendra’s sister, Saira was the heroine)… The tag crazy Bollywood soon enough branded her as the hero’s sister who would be molested by the villain. For example – Tangewala (1972) in which Kumud player Rajendra Kumar’s sister.
The song – Behna Ne Bhai Ki Kalai Pe Pyar Baanda Hai, was picturised on an over-sentimental Dharam and Kumud.
May be she was fed up of the sister roles, Kumud left films after 1975 to get married to an architect and designer.

Thanks for the details about Kumud Chhugani.

Small correction, If we are talking about Mumtaz`s Shararat(1972), in that movie Kumud Chugani is not there and the hero of Shararat is Biswjeet,

I think Bhavana`ji is referring about 1969 SHART, which features sanjay khan and Mumtaz

Thank you very much Bhavana ji for giving valuable information about Kumud Chugani,

I remember,Kumud chugani in
Laadla(with Nirupa Roy and co, which has got some good songs by Laxmi Pyare1966)
Premnagar(with Ramesh Deo->in which she got a character with grey shades),
Bandhe Haath(as a jealous companion of Amitabh Bachchan)
and featured prominently in
Vaasna(1968), where she lip synced for Biswjeet/Rafi/Lata/Sahir/Chitragupt song “Ye parbaton ke daayre, ye shaam ka dhuaan” and featured in Rafi solo(“Itni naazuk na bano”)
