Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Mera jeewan kora kaaghaz kora hi reh gayaa

Posted on: December 16, 2011

Here is a song that should have made it to the blog long time back but somehow it did not. It is a song from my days (viz 1970s) and it was quite an iconic songs of those days.

This song from “Kora Kaaghaz” (1974), which was a movie produced by Sant Kothari and directed by Anil Ganguly. The movie had Vijay Anand,Jaya Bhaduri, Achla Sachdev, A. K. Hangal, Deven Verma, Seema Deo, Ramesh Deo etc. It was a nice movie made on the lives of an ordinary couple.

This song is sung by Kishore Kumar. It is the title song as well as the theme song of the movie. It is a superb song and this song figures in my diary of 1970s where I used to note down the lyrics of songs that I liked those days. That diary is still with me and Raja has seen that diary when he visited me last year. 🙂 However, here I have used the lyrics that were sent to me by nahm. Prakashchandra too had sent me the lyrics of this song independently. This shows how popular this song was, and still is, among music lovers.

Song-Mera jeewan kora kaaghaz kora hi rah gayaa (Kora Kaaghaz)(1974) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-M G Hashmat,MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics(Provided by nahm)

Mera jeewan kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya
mera jeewan kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya
jo likha thha
aa aa
jo likha tha aansuon ke sang beh gaya
mera jeewan
mera jeewan kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya

ik hawa ka jhonka aaya
ho ik hawa ka jhonka aaya
toota daali se phool
toota daali se phool
na pawan ki na chaman ki
kiski hai ye bhool
kiski hai ye bhool
kho gayi
kho gayi
khushboo hawa mein kuch na reh gaya
mera jeewan
mera jeewan kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya

udte panchhi ka thhikaana
ho udte panchhi ka thhikaana
mera na koyi jahaan
mera na koyi jahaan
na dagar hai na khabar hai
jaanaa hai mujh ko kahaan
jaanaa hai mujh ko kahaan
ban ke sapnaa
aa aa
ban ke sapnaa
humsafar ka saath reh gaya
mera jeewan
mera jeewan kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya
jo likha thha
aansuon ke sang beh gaya
mera jeewan kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya
kora hi reh gaya

aa aa aaa aaa aaa
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
ho ho ho
ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho
ho ho
ho ho
ho ho ho
ho ho ho

ik hawa ka jhhonka aaya
ho ik hawa ka jhhonka aaya
toota daali se phool
toota daali se phool
na pawan ki na chaman ki
kiski hai ye bhool
kiski hai ye bhool
kho gayi
kho gayi
khushboo hawa mein kuch na reh gaya
mera jeewan

ban ke sapna
ban ke sapna hamsafar ka saath reh gaya
mera jeewan
mera jeewan kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya
jo likha tha aansoonuon ke sang beh gaya
mera jeevan kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya

dukh ke andar sukh ki jyoti
dukh hi sukh ka gyaan
dukh hi sukh ka gyan
dard sah ke janm leta
har koyi insaan
har koyi insaan
wo sukhi hai
ae ae
wo sukhi hai
jo khushi se dard sah gaya
sukh ka saagar
sukh ka saagar
us ka jeewan ban ke reh gaya

This song brings back lots of memories, Atul. Like you say, it was from our generation – when we were in school.
I remember this song in particular because my paternal grandmother (who did not know a word of Hindi) used to listen to the 2 or 3 cassettes we had in those days, time and again (Actually I used to keep listening to them, she would listen along. ;-)). The cassettes were a mix of songs but mainly of Guddi, Zanjeer, Kora Kagaz, Abhimaan and Yaadon Ki Baaraat. She loved the songs of Guddi but her other 2 favourites were “teri bindiya re” (Rafi-Lata) and “mera jeevan kora kaagaz” (Kishore). She’d keep asking me to play one or the other.

I cannot listen to this song without thinking of her. I also like this song a lot!

There was this dialogue during this song between Jaya and Vijay Anand which was imprinted in my mind because I’d heard it a zillion times on the cassette. (I’ve forgotten bits of it now – it’s been SO many years). But it was something like (J:Jaya, V:Vijay Anand)
J: Kameez ke button toote hain
V: Button kya, sab kuchh hi toot gaya
J: Button silaane waali koi nahin?
V: Ek thi, par aisi gayi ki laut ke hi nahin aayi
J: Aap ne chaaha hi nahin hoga
V: Chaaha to bahut tha, socha bhi bahut tha, magar…

It goes on, I think she breaks down, he cries “Archana!”…then the song continues.

I think these dialogues form part of the song. I have heard the dialogues with the song.

I also didn’t know that this song hadn’t been posted until today. What a wonderful, meaningful song!
Btw, this was one of the movies I watched during my stint in Kerala, and I remember practically bribing someone to go with me by agreeing to go with her to the next movie of her choosing! I still remember how we all wore our sarees like Jaya Bhaduri, and those huge glasses were the vogue, along with the hair being pulled back in a knot at the nape. The Bengal sari was no problem, my wardrobe was full of them, since my parents were living in Calcutta at the time.
I didn’t remember the part of the dialog about the toote hue button, but I remembered her asking, Saara dosh kya mera hi tha? and his replying, Kuch mera bhi tha, and then she asks helplessly, Toh phir yeh sab kyun hua?
Just goes to show that this movie had excellent dialogs and wonderful songs, which are still remembered even today, and bring back such wonderful memories – Raja remembers his grandmother, and I remember my mother, who taped this movie so that she could watch it again and again.

This is also the song for which Kishore Kumar won the national award. I have sent lyrics of two more songs from this film. I dont think the lyrics will be there in your diary for those songs too.

Atul,

The closing lines should be “Sukh Ka Sagar Us Ka Jeevan” and not as mentioned.

Regds / Babu

@ Atul ji – kindly correct this ‘dukh ka saagar, dukh ka saagar,us ka
jeewan ban ke reh gaya’
as
‘Sukh ka saagar, Sukh ka saagar, uska jeewan ban ke reh
gaya !!!
Thanks !
