Marhaba marhaba marhaba ae husn e yaar marhaba

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

There are two films by the name ‘Inspector’, in the list of Hindi films. The first one was released in 1956, and the second one in 1970. There are three songs already posted for the film from 1956. Here is the first song for the 1970 film.

Inspector (1970) is an action thriller about a terrorist who attempts to release a poisonous gas into the atmosphere. The film is produced usner the banner of Kapoor Films, Bombay and is directed by Chand. The film stars Joy Mukherjee, Alka, Sheikh Mukhtar, Zeb Rehman, Helen, Jayant, Paro, Kundan, Murad, Shetty, Kiran Kumar, Uttam Raj etc.

This particular song is a delightful dance piece performed by Helen on screen. The singing voice is that of Asha Bhosle. the lyrics are by SH Behari. (Incidentally, the lyrics for the 1956 film ‘Inspector’ are also penned by SH Behari). The music composition is by N Dutta. Once again, the maxim ‘BGF-AGM’ applies to this song also. (BGF-AGM = B/C Grade Film – A Grade Music). The tempo of the composition is wonderfully tuned for a Helen song. And Helen’s performance, it goes without saying, is impeccable. There are steps and movements she makes, it appears as if she is gliding on the floor without making any effort. Simply superb. Enjoy this, another lovely dance by the Queen of Cabaret.

marhabaa marhabaa marhabaa
ae husen-e-yaar marhabaa
dil kehtaa hai kar loon tujh se pyaar marhabaa

Welcome, welcome, welcome
Welcome to, the appreciator of beauty
My heart welcomes the desires
To be in love with you

meri taraf dil tera jhuke to, mein kadam kuchh aage badhaa doon
apne galey se tujh ki lagaa kar, barson ki doori pal mein ghataa doon
aur kahe tu ho ke beqaraar marhabaa

If your heart be inclined for me
I would gladly walk the few steps towards you
And embrace you in my arms
And take away this separation of ages (such that)
Your heart cries out in an impatient delight, bravo

honthhon pe meetthi meetthi ghazal hai, nagme hain meri angdaayion mein
phir bhi tu pagley soyaa huaa hai, khwaabon ki jhhootthi parchhaai’on mein
chhed zaraa tu mere dil ka saaz marhabaa

A sweet song plays on my lips
And my tender exertions sing songs of love
How is that you are unmindful (of all these advances)
And are sleeping in the false shadows of dreams
(O dear, be wakeful and)
Strum the strings of my heart, bravo

aankhon se teri aankhen milaa kar, armaan apne pooray to kar loon
teri nazar ki masti churaa kar, apni nazar ka paimaanaa bhar loon
dekho phir jawaani ki bahaar marhabaa

I will look into your eyes
And fulfill the desires of my heart
I will steal the euphoria from your eyes
And fill the goblets of my eyes (with it)
Wow, then watch the spring of my youth, bravo

Sudhir ji,
DR.NO-1962 and the subsequent James Bond films, like From Russia with love,Gold finger,Man with the Golden gun etc started a craze all over the world for spy films. Many films were made in practically every film producing countries and languages directly or sheepishly, overtly or covertly, copying the Bond themes adapted to local flavours.
Bollywood was no way behind in the race.
INSPECTOR-1970 was one such movie. The film opens with a scene where Spy No 6 is dying, but not before informing the HQs that Rocky(Kiran kumar),a dreaded international crook has got hold of a poisonous gas, which can destroy every living thing on this earth, threatening the world to get the rulership of the world. After spy no 6 dies, automatically, the Govt.appoints Spy No 7 (just like,007,James Bond !-how childish !!) Inspector Rajesh(Joy Mukherjee),who is probably licenced to bill any amount(like James Bond-licenced to kill anybody !) in any hotel.
On the trail of Rocky,Rajesh saves Rita once and brings her home(for convinience of relaxing and singing songs in style, perhaps),only to find that she is the daughter of Rocky.Rocky meanwhile imports from ‘abroad’ Pinto(our good old Takloo Shetty) and Marshal(Jayant) to kill Rajesh who skilfully survives every attack, thanks to the script.I wonder why Indian killers have to be ‘imported’ from ‘abroad’ to kill Indians ?
Rocky learns about the love affair of Rajesh and Rita (when the whole world knew it loooong back) and orders Rita to kill Rajesh. She’ poisons’ him and the dead body is sent to Rocky for confirmation. At the appropriate time the ‘dead ‘Hero springs to life and there is a well arranged fighting, firing and chaos.
Finally, our Indian James Bond captures Rocky !
Farz-1967 was actually can be called a forerunner to such spy films in Hindi.Farz, was however,a very entertaining film of the jumping Jack,Jeetendra.Compared to that, this Inspector was not even a Havaldar!
