Jeewan jyoti bujhti jaaye

on:In Hindi movies, a female character singing a bhajan in front of the idol of a God used to be a standard scene from 1950s to 1970s. I have always wondered who pioneered this genre of songs. Now I believe that I have got my answer. Having watched a few such songs from the earlier days of Hindi movies, I have now come to the conclusion that Amirbai Karnataki could well be the first singer to sing such bhajans as well as the first actress to enact them on screen.
Here is a song from “Vidya” (1948). Here Amirbai Karnataki is seen singing a Bhajan, requesting the almighty to show her the way on the face of adversity that her family is facing.
One must say that Amirbai Karnataki, in addition to being a superb singer, made a pretty Maa as well on screen, especially while singing such bhajans.
Here is this lovely bhajan from “Vidya” (1948). It is written by Yashonandan Joshi. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Lyrics
Jeewan jyoti bujhti jaaye
tujh bin kaun jagaaye
tujh bin kaun jagaaye
prabhu jee
prabhu jee
tujh bin kaun jagaaye
chaaron oar chhaaya andhiyaara
soojhat naahin door kinaaraa
chaaron oar chhaaya andhiyaara
soojhat naahin door kinaaraa
tera hi hai ek sahaara
tera hi hai ek sahaara
tujh bin kaun sujhaaye
tujh bin kaun sujhaaye
prabhu jee
prabhu jee
tujh bin kaun sujhaaye
dukh aaye parwaah nahin hai
sukh paane ki chaah nahin hai
dukh aaye
main moorakh manzil ko dhhondhhoon
main moorakh manzil ko dhhondhhoon
tujh bin kaun bataaye
tujh bin kaun bataaye
prabhu jee
prabhu jee
tujh bin kaun bataaye
uljhe hain jab oonch neech ke
uljhan mein oonche neech ke uljhan mein
bolo kaise chain miley phir jeewan mein
chain miley phir jeewan mein
bani hamaari bigad rahi hai
bani hamaari bigad rahi hai
tujh bin kaun banaaye
tujh bin kaun banaaye
prabhu jee
prabhu jee
tujh bin kaun banaaye
