Chaand akela jaaye sakhi ri

Posted on: January 6, 2012

“Aalap” (1977) was a movie that turned out to be a commercial disaster. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, it is easy for me to say that movies should not be judged on the basis of their box office performance, but unfortunately that is the single most important yardstick to judge the success of a movie. After the failure of this movie, Amitabh Bachchan resolved not to work in an offbeat movie like this. After a few years, he worked in another such off beat movie called “Main Aazaad Hoon” with similar disastrous results at the box office.

The fact that there was no viable market for such offbeat movies means that few producers would risk making such movies again, especially after seeing the fate of such movies.

The fact that this movie had nice songs in it (which again failed to catch the ears of public) means that songs like this too were not created again.

Here is a nice song from this movie which I heard for the first time only just now. It just shows the extent of poor marketreability of movies that fail at the box office. Even die hard music buffs like me are not much aware of the music of such movies despite living in the era when such music was created.

Today (6th january) is the death anniversary of Jaidev. On this occasion, here is this nice Jaidev composition from “Aalaap” (1977). This song is sung by Yesudas and it is picturised on Amitabh Bacchchan. The picturisation also shows a lady and a gentleman playing Bhabhi abd Bhaaiyya of Amitabh Bachchan whom I am unable to identify. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify them.
PS-They are Vijay Sharma and Lily Chakravarty. I thank Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh for identifying them.

The song also contains some fun dialogues mouthed by Amitabh Bachchan.

Rahi Masoom Raza is the lyricist of this song.

Song-Chaand akela jaaye sakhi ri (Aalaap)(1977) Singer-Yesudas, Lyrics-Rahi Masoom Reza, MD-Jaidev

Chaand akela

chaand akela
jaaye sakhi ri
chaand akela
jaaye sakhi ri
kaahe akela
jaaye sakhi ri
man mora
ghabraaye ri
sakhi ri
sakhi ri
o sakhi ri
chaand akela
jaaye sakhi ri
Chaand akela

your honour
main ye jaanna chaahta hoon
ki chaand ko ye adhikaar kisne diya
ki wo apni premika ko akela chhodkar chala jaaye
arre ye kya mazaak hai
suno na
ye mazaak nahin your honour
ye ek dukhi aatma ki pukaar hai
qanoon agar aapki tarah aurat hota to
meri muwaqqila Shrimati Premika ke dil ka dard samajh leta
koi ladki zindagi bhar
ek sakhi ke saath baat kar ke nahin reh sakti
mujhe poora yaqeen hai your honour ki adaalat
premika ki poori duaayen sunane ke baad chaand ke
jaane ke khilaaf hamen stay order zaroor degi

wo bairaagi
wo manbhaawan
wo bairaagi
wo manbhaawan
kab aayegaa
morey aangan
itna to batlaaye ri
sakhi ri
sakhi ri
o sakhi ri
chaand akela
jaaye sakhi ri
Chaand akela

chaand ki ye khuli huyi jyaadati dekhiye
your honour
ek to wo bechaari premika ko
akela chhodkar
apna ataa pataa bataaye bina chala jaa raha hai
aur ye bhi bataane ko taiyyar nahin hai
ke wo kab wapas aayegaa
gentlemen of the jury bhi aa gaye
gentlemen of the jury
aap bhi sochiye
aur ye bhool kar sochiye
ki aap mard hain
sochiye sochiye sochiye
bhai sochne samajhne ka kaam
apni bhaabhi pe chhod do
i object your honour
jo ki bvakeel hai
itna bhi nahin jaante ki
adaalat na kisi ki beewi hoti hai
na bhaabhi
adaalat kyunki streeling hai
wo jury bina bhi
premika ke dil ki haalat samajh sakti hai
ye hansne ki baat nahin hai me lord
hansne ki baat nahin hai

ang ang mein
holi dehke
ang ang mein
holi dehke
man mein bela chameli mehke
ye rut kyaa kehlaaye ri
bhaabhi ri
bhaabhi ri
bhaabhi ri
chaand akela
chaand akela
chaand akelaa

Atul ji,
The Bhaiya is Vijay Sharma and the Bhabhi is Lily Chakravarti.

Thanks for this information.

and i always thought that the brother was Rakesh Pandey

this actor was also ther in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Khoobsurat” as Rekha’s Jijaji

This Vijay Sharma was in Guddi also as a Kishan, Jaya Bhaduri’s brother. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Is he related to Romesh Sharma?

Whether this is the same lily chakravarthy who acted with Vinod khanna(in Gulzar`s)ACHANAK(enacting the role of wife, who ditches her army husband and later get murdered by the husband).

I think she is there in Chupke chupke(as Asrani`s wife)and in Vinod Khanna`s INKAAR(as Dr.Sriram lagoo`s)wife, Am I right?????

Prakash ji,
You are right.

Wow! How nice to read these posts by knowledgeable people who really pay attention to good films and remember the characters. How unfortunate that Chand Akela was not so popular. However, ” Koi gaata” is still well remembered.

“Aalaap” is still my one of Hrishidaa favourite. So many legends came together for this classic movie.
Jaidev Verma
Harivanshrai Bachchan,
Dr.Rahi Masoom Reza,
Om prakash(with grey shades his character & acting is superb),
Sanjeev kumar,
Chhaya devi,
Asrani(I love his acting in this),
Lata Mangeshkar(Her Mata saraswthi & kaahe manwaa naache is outstanding)
Yesudas(Industy opinion is that movie flopped because Yesudass sang for Amitji instead of Kishore kumar)
Jayawant Pathare,Bimal Dutta, Amithabh,Rekha,Madhurani(singer)

Ooooh, where can I get another movie like this.
Kaash Main is movie ko Bade parde par dekh Paataa!!!!!

But Yesudas has given his voice to Amitji for a song in Trishul “mohabbat bade kaam ki cheez hai”. Yesudasji has given a perfect voice for the line”kitabon me chhapate hain chahat ke kisse”. I agree it was not a classical song like aalap, but his voice matches with Amitji for that song. May be Yesudasji’s classical voice doesn’t match with Amitji. But then question is could Kishoreda have justified this classical songs? Jaidevji and Yesudasji has put tremendous effort for these songs of Aalap. These are just my point of views.
