Posted on: January 14, 2012

Nashaad, not to be confused with Naushad, was born as Shaukat Ali. He began his career as a music director in Hindi movies in 1947. In his earlier movies, he was variously known as Shaukat Ali, Shaukat Dehalvi, Shaukat Hussain, Shaukat Haidari, Shaukat Hussain Haidari etc. It was in 1953 that film director cum lyricist Nakshab Jarachavi coined the name Nashad for him. The name brought him luck. In fact this name was adopted by his family members as their surname the way the desendents of music director Roshan adopted the name Roshan (first name of Roshanlal Nagrath) as their surname.

“Naghma” (1953) was the movie where Shaukat Ali worked under the name of Nashad for the first time. He worked in Hindi movies till 1962 and then migrated to Pakistan in 1964. He died on 14th january 1981, exatly 30 years ago.

I have discussed as many as three songs from this movie in the past. On the occasion of Nashaad’s death anniversary, here is his well known composition from “Naghma” (1953). This song is sung by Shamshad Begam and its lyrics are written by Nakshab.

I have heard this song many a times in the past, though I was not clear about the details of this song, and I in fact thought that this song was already covered in the blog. I became aware of the details of this song only after Mr Sadanand Kamath sent me the lyrics of this song to be discussed on this occasion.

It is to be noticed that the second para gets repeated again in the fourth para of this song, which may make one feel that that the audio link may be from recorded song in two parts in 78 RPM record. But Mr Sadanand Kamath opines that there is absolutely no break in orchestration in between the stanzas to support this presumption. It will be interesting to get the opinions of other knowledgeable readers on this topic.

On the occasion of Nashaad’s death anniversary, here is this nice Nashaad composition from “Naghma”(1953) for the listening pleasure of the music lovers.

Song-Badi mushqil se dil ki beqaraari ko qaraar aaya (Naghma)(1953) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Nakshab, MD-Nashaad

Lyrics(Provided by Sadanand Kamath)

aye mera dil lootne waale
mujhe tuj par yaqeen hai
aye mera dil lootne wale
tujhe meri mohabbat

bahut roka bahut chaaha
na lab par dil ki baat aaye
bahut roka bahut chaaha
na lab par dil ki baat aaye
magar phir bhi tumhaara
magar phir bhi tumhaara naam lab par baar baar aaya

mujhe tujh par yaqeen hain aye mera dil lootne wale
mujhe tujh par yaqeen hain aye mera dil lootne wale
tujhe meri mohabbat

ghadi bhar ke liye aye kaash woh ghadiyaan palat aayen
ghadi bhar ke liye aye kaash woh ghadiyaan palat aayen
woh gadiyaan jo mera dil
woh gadiyaan jo mera dil teri mehfil mein guzaar aaya

Atulsab,
I want there shouldn’t be any mistakes on this otherwise wonderful blog. We are humans. We err. But we can correct ourselves.
Earlier I suggested to correct something immediately on 4th December 2011.Now I request you to correct the last name of Roshansab as soon as possible..

Most mistakes are typos here, which I correct as they are pointed out. Sometimes making corrections may get delayed for various reasons, like sayy being preoccupied with more pressing matters and they forgetting about that. You may remind me again in such cases.

For the sake of accuracy, i wish to say, in this song the word “Mushkil” is appearing so many times. The alphabet in this word is “K” and not “Q’. This word is a common enough in urdu/hindi songs has appeared so many times, that i gave up trying to correct it. Now i hope in future we can all take care.

Atul ji,
Naashaad was a reasonably good composer, who gave us some melodious songs, like this one.I remember 2 things about him.
One is about his change of name
.Nakshab Jarachavi was a successful lyricist, who used to sometimes write Film stories,Dialogues and screen plays also. When he wanted to produce NAGHMA in 1953,he wanted that the reigning composer Naushad should give music to his film. When he approached Naushad with an offer,Naushad-it is said-told him,” I dont give music to any ‘aira gaira’s films” Nakshab was stunned and he threw a challenge to Naushad that as a producer he will create another Naushad and show him his value.
Nakshab then called Shaukat Ali Dehalvi, gave him his film for composing and changed his name to NAASHAAD. From this film onwards Naashaad only used this name till the end.
The second thing is,once somebody asked him in an interview, why almost all of his compositions give a feeling of having heard this tune somewhere earlier. In other words, why does he do plagiarism ?
Naashaad said,” with only 7 main notes(sa re ga ma pa dha ni),only 6 Raagas,36 Raaginis and 72 Sub Raginis, every ‘new’ composition is bound to sound familiar in some places.”

This song wasn’t posted yet? It is quite a famous song, isn’t it? At least I happen to know this song from my childhood days, so maybe I’m getting the impression that it is quite famous.

Interesting stories there about Nashaad. Thanks Arunji. One can always count on you for background info about anything to do with an artiste or a film. I love all these nuggets of information.

Yes, this song is “how come this song was not yet posted” category of song. It was quite a popular song of its time and even in the “Puraani filmon ke geeton ka programme” later on.

in the 4th line it should be zaalim instead of jaalim.
