A semi classical creation from N Dutta. A versatile musician, N Dutta’s films display the range of his creativity. In a career that lasted a better part of three decades from 50s thru 70s, most of his film names sound like B/C grade films, with very few A grade films or known hits to his credit. A few names do stand out as films easily remembered, viz., Chandrakanta, Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke, Dharamputra, Saadhna, Dhool Ka Phool, Black Cat, Bhai Bahen, Didi, Naya Raasta etc.
Searching for gems that I remember from my childhood and teen years, I have been bumping into many songs that generate a ‘wow’ in the mind, having caught up with such songs after a long wait. And then another reaction follows, ‘Oye, N Dutta. Kya baat hai’.
This is one such song, the melodious memory of which has been with me for decades. The audio of this song is in my collection, but recently I located the video of this song online. The film is a family drama, ‘Holiday in Bombay’ from 1963. Shashi Kapoor was in his formative years beyond being a child actor, and was gaining attention. The film is produced under the banner of Yug Chhaayaa, Bombay, and is directed by PL Santoshi. The actor credits includes Shashi Kapoor, Vijaya Chaudhry, Rajendra Nath, Naseem Banu, Ulhas, Dhoomal, Randhir, P Kailash, Suolochana Chatterjee, Lakshmi Chhaayaa, Rajan Haksar, Jeevankala, Ram Kumar, Renu Makkad, Heera Saawant, Kundan, BB Bhalla, D Silip, Nazir Kashmiri, Hublikar. The film has 8 songs penned by four poets – Anand Bakshi, Anjaan, PL Santoshi and Anwar Farrukhabaadi. The lyrics for this particular song are written by Anand Bakshi. The wonderful melody is created by N Dutta. The flow of music makes a wonderful use of ‘sitaar’ (stringed musical instrument). The song is presented as a stage performance. Vijaya Chaudhry plays the sitar and sings. There is a dance accompaniment by another actress – very familiar but I am unable to place her. Request other readers to please help identify this dancer.
A song from a heart in love, probably new to these emotions, for she is telling the papiha bird not to sing its song. Because she is pining for her lover, and the song of the papiha would reveal this secret to the world. Beautiful words, a wonderful tune that has been lovingly rendered by Lata ji. Vijaya’s performance has done justice to the words. Enjoy this gem.
pihu pihu papihay na bol
paa’on padoon mein paapi tere
bhed na mere khol
O papiha bird
Pray do not sing your song
my entreaty at your feet, o troublemaker
Pray do not reveal the secret (of my heart)
(Note: The papiha bird is also known as the rain bird; its singing can be heard mostly in the rainy season).
mushkil thha pehle se jeena
us pe aayaa saawan ka mahinaa
na sambhlegaa dekh agar ye
mann jaayega dol
Life has been an ordeal anyways
And then came the season of rains
This heart, this mind
will not remain steady
ghabraa ke teri batiyon se
kehnaa padega sab kuchh sakhiyon se
ab tak mein ne baat chhupaayee
kar ke taal-matol
Fearful of your gossiping
I will have to share my heart’s secret
With my friends
So long I have kept it hidden
On one pretext or another
kaam tujhe bas apni sadaa se
koi jeeye ya marey teri balaa se
mera khoya chain bhalaa kyaa
tu na degaa bol
Your concern is just your own songs
Another’s suffering means nothing to you
My peace is gone
Is that something will you not reveal?
(i.e. you will reveal it to others)

This reminds me of another N Datta creation for the movie Dhool Ka Phool, viz. Kaase Kahoon Man Ki Baat.

Sudhir ji,
HOLIDAY IN BOMBAY-1963,directed by P.L.Santoshi was a really hilarious film.I remember seeing this film in its first run itself. The film did a brisk business too.
This is a story of two cousins who have decided to never ever marry in life.Once thay come to Bombay for a pleasure trip.Instead of returning as singles, they fall in love with 2 neighbourhood girls.Nath(Shashi Kapoor) loves Vijaya(Vijaya Chaudhary) and cousin Gautam (Rajendranath) falls for Seema(Naseem Banu-not to be confused with Saira Banu’s mother who retired in 1957,with last film Nausherwan-e- Aadil. This was a new comer disappearing after this one film.)Incidentally, this Gautam is also called Gauti in the film, just like today’s cricketer Gautam Gambhir
The Mama of Vijaya and father of Seema refuse their proposal of Marriage,so they do a civil marriage and bring their wives home. The Mama(Rajen Haksar),who had demanded 50,000 from Nath, sends 2 false wives to their house.Vijaya and Seema are fooled and go away to Mayaka.Meanwhile Nath’s father(Ulhas) arrives. All this confusion creates quite a funny situation.Dhumal,as Seema’s Boxer father is just superb.
No need to say that everything settles down peacefully and the lovebirds are united once again, this time with all elder’s blessings.
