Manzil ki chaah mein
Posted on: February 29, 2012
There have been several adaptations of the novel Devdas, not only in Hindi movies, but in movies of other languages too. Among the various movies of this name, “Devdas” (1935) and “Devdas”(1955) are regarded as masterpieces.
Music of these two movies contributed a lot in the success of these two movies. Most songs of these two movies are timeless classics and are well known to music lovers.
Well not all songs are well known to all. Here is a song from “Devdas” (1955) that I may have vaguely heard of in the past, but I was not aware that it is a song from “Devdas” (1955). The fact that I have not watched the movie certainly helps my aim, viz my aim of remaining foreever in ignorance :).
This song is sung by Rafi with chorus continuously singing the same few lines in the background.
Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Chorus=Fuchsia
Lyrics(Provided by nahm)
raahi o raahi
manzil ki chaah mein
raahi ke waaste
sukh ke bhi raaste
dukh ke bhi raaste
manzil ki chaah mein
raahi ke waaste
sukh ke bhi raaste
dukh ke bhi raaste
kahin ghani chhaaon hai
kahin kadi dhoop hai
manzil ki chhaah mein
ye bhi ek roop hai
ee ee
wo bhi ek roop hai
manzil ki chhaah mein
kai yahaan khoyenge
kai yahaan paayenge
raahi
ee ee
kai abhi jaayenge
kai abhi aayenge
o o o o
raahi
kai abhi jaayenge
ae ae
kai abhi aayenge
manzil ki chaahh mein
raahi ke waaste
manzil ki chaahh mein
raahi ke waaste
sukh ke bhi raaste
dukh ke bhi raaste
manzil ki chaah mein
raahi o raahi

You said it Mani ji
The new version Devdas and Paaro are mere cardboard cut outs. No on screen chemistry only screen opulence, You should watch the scenes between shahrukh and aishwarya, they giggle (instead of act and emote)as if they are acting in a primary school fancy dress competition.
I second your opinion about the new version of Devdas.

This is a beautifully shot song. Chandramukhi (Vyjayanthimala) comes in search of Devdas, while Paro (Suchitra Sen) is going back to her husbands house in a palanquin. It’s a poignant scene as the two women glance at each other. Each doesn’t know the other. This is the only scene where their paths cross. Very very briefly. Bimal Roy and the lead actors brought the characters to life.
This is sharp contrast to the trashy colour version (2002) starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit. The characters were, at best, cardboard cutouts!
