Choli bheegi lat bheegi bheega ye badan

Posted on: April 16, 2012

When one looks at the Hindi movie actors of today, one finds that almost all of them are relatives of old time movie personalities. And those who are not, become related to old time film personalities by marrying into such families. So much so that it is a daunting task for rank outsiders to break into Hindi movies.

As far as the present generation movie watchers are concerned, then know the present day actors and they do not realise that the parent(s) of these present day actors too were in the same profession in the past decades. I had in fact written one article in my (by now virtually defunct)original blog.

Look at most present day actors. You will find that they are all related to old generation film personalities. All Khans (except Shahrukh Khan), Kapoors, Roshans, etc. And not just that, they are often related to other filmy families through other marriages. If one has to introduce new generation movie goers to old generation fil personalities, you need to introduce then as the parents/grandparents of present day actors. I for instance made my daughter familiar with Amitabh Bachchan by telling her that he was the father of Abhishekh Bachchan ! Many of the younger generation fans may not be aware that Abhishekh Bachchan’s mother too was a leading film star in her own right.

Likewise Sonakshi Sinha too has filmy connections. Most fans know that she is the daughter of Shatrughan Sinha. But like in case of Abhishekh Bachchan, Sonakshi Sinha’s mother too was an actress !

Since a picture is worth thousand words and a video is worth much more, here is a song which is picturised on Sonakshi Sinha’s mother. She was not known as Sonakshi Sinha’s mother those days, though. She was called Komal and later she changed her name to Poonam.

Here is this song from “Aag Aur Daag” (1970) where Poonam played the lead role opposite Joy Mukherji. This movie, which was produced by Swarn Singh and directed by A Salaam also had Jayant, Zeb Rahman, Helen, Master Bhagwan, I. S. Johar, Madan Puri, Sudhir, Rajan Haksar, Kundan, Paro, Sumeet Pathak, Raj Rani, Roopali, Samina, Shabana, Shaloo, Shefali, M.B. Shetty etc in it.

Picturisation of the song shows Komal entering a river and singing about getting her clothes and body wet. What would happen if her beloved arrives and sees her inthat state ! That is what she sings about. And her beloved, Joy Mukherji indeed arrives but watches discreetly from a distance and makes his moves only after the song is over.

The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. S H Bihari is the lyricist. Music is composed by N Datta.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Choli bheegi lat bheegi bheega ye badan (Aag Aur Daag)(1971) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-S H Bihari, MD-N Datta

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

hmm hmm hmm
ha haha ha
ha ha ha ha ha ha

choli bheegi lat bheegi
bheega yeh badan
kya ho ga aise mein jo aa jaayen sajan
choli bheegi lat bheegi
bheega yeh badan
kya ho ga aise mein jo aa jaayen sajan
choli bheegi

main to sharma jaaungi
main to ghabra jaaungi
main to sharma jaaungi
main to ghabra jaaungi
kyun meri yeh haalat hai
kaise yeh samjhaaungi
thar thar thar thar kaanpega
thar thar thar thar kaanpega
chaandi ka badan
kya hoga
kya hoga aise mein jo aa jaayen sajan
choli bheegi lat bheegi
bheega yeh badan
kya hoga aise mein jo aa jaayen sajan
choli bheegi

chupke chupke raah takoon
chori chori aah bharoon
chupke chupke raah takoon
chori chori aah bharoon
man hi man mein yeh sochoon
kaise un ko pyaar karoon
kitni pyaari pyaari hai
un ki yeh lagan
kya hoga
hmm hmm hmm
kya hoga aise mein jo aa jaayen sajan
choli bheegi lat bheegi
bheega yeh badan
kya hoga aise mein jo aa jaayen sajan
choli bheegi

aaj ki rut mastaani bhi
meri shokh jawaani bhi
do saanson ki khushboo se
thanda thanda paani bhi
mehka hoga jaise ke
mehka hoga jaise ke
phoolon ka chaman
kya hoga
kya hoga aise mein jo aa jaayen sajan
choli bheegi lat bheegi
bheega yeh badan
kya hoga aise mein jo aa jaayen sajan
choli bheegi haaye

Komal was quite a beautiful girl though not a great actress. She had appeared in many movies before she tied the knot with Shatrughan Sinha….

Nice write-up. 🙂 We seem to have this nepotism / dynastic thinking in every field. But this has been going on for decades.

For a long time, I did not even know Saira Banu’s mother was also a pretty well-known heroine of yesteryear. I’d vaguely heard of Naseem Banu (I’d seen her name in the credits for “costumes” in Saira’s movies) but only when I saw some movies of hers, I realised how beautiful she was. I find her much more beautiful than Saira (not that Saira is not beautiful :-)).

Same for Nutan – Shobhna Samarth. After a while, people may have been referring to Shobhna as “Nutan’s mother”. 🙂

Btw, it’s a pity there is no wikipedia page yet for Naseem Banu. If you type “Naseem Banu wiki” you get the page of Saira. Surely Naseem Banu was famous in her own right too?

There is very little information about so so so many artists. The worst part is that the people who know many such people intimately are also, alas, dying out.

However, gradually people are realising the importance of such information, and are posting a lot of memoires online, even if it is a slight improvement, it is welcome.

Raja ji,
Here is a small write up on NASEEM BANU,for you.
She was born to singer actress Shamshad Bai-a Punjabi from Amritsar-in Delhi. She was known as Chhamiyan in her younger days.
Her first film was Khoon ka Khoon(Hamlet) in 1936 and second was Khan Bahadur-37,both with Soharab modi.Pukar-1939 made her famous in India. She sang ‘Zindagi ka saaz bhi kya saaz hai’ in that film.
she acted in Taj Mahal(Prithwiraj Kapoor),Chal chal re Naujawan(Ashok kr.),Begum,Betaab,Mitha Jahar,Ujala,Talaq,Chandani Raat,Anokhi ada,Sheesh mahal,Nausherwane adil,Sikander and Jhansi ki Raani,
Naseem Bano was so beautiful, that Prince Mojam Jah of Hyderabad wanted to marry her.Her mother took her to Hyderabad, but realised that she will be a caged animal in
Hyderabad, they ran away stealthily from Hyderabad and reached Bombay.Later she married Mian Ehsaan.
She died on 18-6-2002 with only 3 Film industry persons attending her funeral.
Dilip kumar had acted against Naseem Bano as well as her daughter Saira Banu,as a Hero.

Arunji, once more thank you so much for all this information. One may or may not be able to rely on wikipedia but one can always rely on our Arunpedia (gustaakhi maaf!). 🙂

I’m not surprised that the prince wanted to marry her, given how beautiful she was. Saira does sometimes resemble her mother but I do think her mother had more classical beauty. Almost like a painting in Paris museum.

Of the movies you’ve mentioned, I’ve seen Sheesh Mahal, Nausherwan-e-Adil and Sikandar. I’ve heard the songs of Anokhi Ada – lovely.

Thanks once again.

Though there are many relatives in Film Industry, it is quite a misleading statement that entry for new talents (unrelated new talents) is very restricted. There is Ranveer Singh, even Shahrukh Khan, Anuksha Sharma, Sonu Sood, Maliaka Arora (she married Arbaaz after she became a star with chaiyan chaiyan. Similarly, being related to a famous actor/actress is no guarantee for stardom. Prithviraj Kapoor was a famous actor when Raj Kapoor wanted to enter the industry. He had to struggle s 3rd assistant to Kedar Sharma and was even slapped by him once when giving clap Rj Kapoor got too near the hero and his beared was entangled in the clapper-board. Raj’s son had mixed success. whereas Randhir was not too successful as an actor/director, Rishi was a successful star actor, sadly not as a dirctor, though his AA AB LOUT CHALEN was quite well made. Rajeev, on the other hand failed as an actor or director. Similarly Rajender Kumar and Manoj Kumar could not make stars of their sons. It is quite like any other profession. Doctor wants his son to become a doctor and a lawyer wants his son to become a lawyer too. And many times the son proves to be a more successful doctor or lawyer. Yes, being related to a film star helps one to enter but it is no gurantee for success. Shashi Kapoor had a difficult time to establish himself as peaplr first called him Prithviraj’s son and later Raj/Shammi’s brother. Abhishek might have been more successful had he not been Amitabh’s son. By the way even the younger generation knows and worships Amitabh. It will be nice to know how mny film families are ther in Bollywood. There are the Kapoors, the BR Chopra clan, the Samarths — Shobhana, Nutan, Tanuja, Kajol ; then there are the Mukherjees, the Anands and the Khans — Salim & Aamir.Even in music there are many present day music directors whose fathers were music directors too. Rajesh Roshan, Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit and Chitragupt’s sons etc. There is only one father and son music directors who competed with eadh other— S. D. Burman and R. D. Burman. They were in the industry as independent music directors for over 9 years !

Atul ji,
You have rightly pointed out that having relations in the film industry is a permit to enter the industry. As VijayKumar Guptaji, states,it is also true that totally unconnected persons have also made a name for them in the Industry.A few famous names are,Amitabh Bachhan,Shahrukh khan,Dilip kumar,Dev Anand,Sunil Dutt to name a few off hand. There are some more also.
One has to consider how it started. In the begining era of the indusrty, people used to scorn actors and no one willingly joined the films, especially the female actors. Why even Dadasaheb phalke had to use his wife and son in the film making effort.Since it was difficult to get artistes for films,it became imperative for the existing artists to entice and force their acquaintances or relatives to join the industry. Thus started the slow flow.Later when the industry took shape and people realised that there was name, fame and lot of money, the progeny of the serving artists willingly joined the films.Still later they eagerly looked forward to join.Inspite of having higher education or even foreign degrees, professional qualifications(as a safety belt),the newer gen. is anxious to make it in the films.
Starting from jaddanbai-Nargis,Shobhana samarth and her daughters,grand-grand daughters,khote family,Ashok and the kumar brothers-their children,Prithwiraj kapoor and the entire khandan-countless-,gemini ganesh-Rekha,Zahida,Shahida,Nalini jaywant,Tanuja,behl,Kajol,Tanisha,shabana,Anup(Ashok kr.’s son),Amit kr,pradeep-beena,Balraj-Parikshit,Dilip-Nasir-Ayub,Amir-Imran,premnath-premkishen,Dev-suneil,Vijay,chetan,kumar Gaurav,Sanjay dutt,puru,sunny,bobby,Abhishek,kunal,ferdeen,Tusshar,Rahul-akshay,Shantaram-jayashri-Rajashri-sandhya,Meera J,Naina sahu,Rajesh,dimple,twinklw,simple,rinky,Sharmila-saif-soha,ameeta-shiba,sarika-shruti,hema-esha,maushami-Megha,The Roshans,Sonam,mimoh,konkona,prateik,juhi,imaad,sonia,baweja,
mukesh-nitin,imran khan etc….etc…… unending list & it continues.
Nowadays,it is almost impossible to enter and shine unless……
