Lata Mangeshkar has sung more duets with late Mohammad Rafi than with any other singer. The duo showered about 440 melodiously memorable gems on music lovers — beginning with “Chal ho gayi taiyaar” in “Shadi Se Pehle” (1947).
Some of their numbers have somehow ended up being lesser known than their perennial evergreens for the reasons other than melody, rendition or lyrics.
One such surpassingly sweet number is “Bahut aasaan hai chilaman se lagkar muskuraanaa” in the Geeta Bali-Shammi Kapoor-Mala Sinha starrer “Rangeen Raaten” (1956). Picturized on debonair Shammi Kapoor and demure Mala Sinha, it is a melodious banter of lovers: The boy playfully asserts how easy it is for his lover to carry on the affair smilingly at him across the slitted veil (chil’man) — to which she bewails how reckless would it be to bring their affair out in the open. Rafi and Lata have beautifully vocalized the irony of the situation expreesed in Kidar Sharma’s lyrics under Roshan’s baton.
It is interesting to note that 6 years earlier, the same lyricist-music director combine of Kidar Sharma and Roshan had also melodiously captured another — and better known — love banter in the Bawre Nain (1950) duet: “Mujhe sach-sach bataa d” with Mukesh on Shammi Kapoor’s illustrious elder brother Raj, and Geeta Dutt on Shammi’s the-then wife-to-be Geeta Bali.
