Le le dard paraaya kar de door gham ka saaya

Posted on: June 16, 2012

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Remembering Hemant Da on his birth anniversary today.

This is a very uplifting song, and a very dear memory that I carry from my radio listening days. The manner of rendition contains a conviction in the voice that simply establishes this sentiment to be true – “be a comfort to others, sacrifice your own happiness. . . in the end your own happiness will itself come to you.”

This wonderful song is from the 1957 film, ‘Chhote Baabu’. The film is a social drama produced under the banner of Movie Stars, Bombay, by LS Aggarwal, and is directed by Harsukh Bhatt. The main star line up includes Nimmi, Shekhar, Abhi Bhattacharya, Agha, Helen, Kanhaiyyalal, Leela Misra, Shivraj, Shammi, Umakant, Dev Krishan, Meenu, Seema, Raj Sood, CL Shah. There are a total of seven songs in this film, that have been penned by four poets, viz., Indeevar, PL Santoshi, Kaif Irfani and Chandrashekhar Pandey. This song has been written by Chandrashekhar Pandey. The music composition is by Madan Mohan.

About the film itself – two songs from this film are already posted on this blog, and in the comments, I could locate the following summary of the film, written by Dr. Rashmikant Vyas.

This was a movie of a love triangle. Shekhar is a station master, in love with Nimmi who is a nurse, and nurses Shekhar’s best friend Abhi Bhattacharya in the hospital. He too falls in love with Nimmi and reveals this to Shekhar. Shekhar for the sake of friendship asks Nimmi to marry his friend. This was quite a successful film, and Madan Mohan’s music is fantastic.

Yes, the songs from this film are very memorable, two of them already on this blog. A Talat-Lata duet, “Teri Chamakti Aankhon Ke Aage Ye Sitaare Kuchh Bhi Nahin” , and a Talat solo “Do Din Ki Mohabbat Mein Hum Ne” . And another song for children sung by Lata – “Aane Waale Kal Ki Tum Tasveer Ho”, that I am sure will soon find its place here.

Based on the brief description by Dr. Vyas, it appears that this song could be a background song or a song sung by another actor. Most likely during the time when Shekhar finds out about the emotions that Abhi Bhattacharya carries for Nimmi, and is trying to make up his mind about what he should do. The words of this song are an exhortation for making personal sacrifices for the sake of someone else’s happiness, and that in return one’s own happiness will find a way.

Rendition cannot be any better, it is Hemant Da at his best. Enjoy this lovely gem of a song from him.

le le dard paraaya, kar de door gham ka saayaa
teri khushi tujh ko mil hi jaayegi

(O good hearted people)
Accept the pain of another, as your own
Remove the gloom of sorrows
Be assured, your own happiness
Will surely come to you

khushi auron ko de ke tu le le gham
teri haar bhi jeet se kuchh na kam
jo kisi ke kaam aayaa, jisne roton ko hasaayaa
us ki kashti bhi kinaare lag hi jaayegi

Give happiness to others
In exchange for their sorrow
What may seem as a loss to you
Really, is no less than a victory
One who can help others
One who would bring smiles in place of tears
His boat is sure to reach the shores safely

jiyaa apni khaatir to wo kyaa jiyaa
kiyaa khud ko khush-haal to kya kiyaa
tu bahaar ban jaa, saari duniya pe chhaa
murjhaayee kali bhi khil hi jaayegi

One who exists only for the self
And works for his own happiness only
His life is a waste
Be like spring
And pervade all over
And the dwindling buds
Will freshen up and flower again

tu duniya mein apna nishaan chhod jaa
rahey yaad wo dastaan chhod jaa
jo ho zindagi se haaraa, ban ja us ka sahaaraa
teri manzil bhi tujhe mil hi jaayegi

Leave behind a memory in this world
A tale that would be remembered for ages
Be the support for those
Who seem defeated in this fracas of life
Be assured, your own destination
Will surely be attained

us ki kashti bhi kinaare lag hi jaayegi

jiyaa apni khaatir to wo kyaa jiyaa
kiyaa khud ko khush-haal to kya kiyaa
jiyaa apni khaatir to wo kyaa jiyaa
kiyaa khud ko khush-haal to kya kiyaa
to kya kiyaa
tu bahaar ban jaa
saari duniya pe chhaa
murjhaayee kali bhi khil hi jaayegi
le le dard paraaya
kar de door gham ka saayaa
teri khushi tujh ko mil ji jaayegi

tu duniya mein apna nishaan chhod jaa

Sudhir ji,
CHHOTE BABU-1957 was an average film with the usual saga of sacrifice and friendship. The Director was Harsukh bhai Jagneshwar Bhatt, who was a distant relative of Vijay Bhatt the famous director.Harsukh worked as Vijay Bhatt’s assistant in the famous film,Baiju Banwra-1952.From 1953 onwarda he started independently as a director and till 1977 he directed 14 films and also Produced’Gayatri Mahima’ in 1977.
Gopal(Shekhar) and Shankar(Abhi Bhatta.) are fast friends living in a hill station-Neelam Ghat.Shankar is a poet and always sick.He is afraid that one day he may just die without even getting married.Gopal always tries to encourage him.Gopal is in love with Sandhya(Nimmi),who works in a local Hospital as a Nurse. They decide ti get married.Gopal is asstt.station master in the Railways. When Gopalmgoes to shanker to inform him about his dicision to marry Sandhya,he finds that Shankar is missing since few days.
In fact Shankar is very sick and admitted in the Hospital as Kailash.Sandhya is attending Kailash.Kailash falls in her love and proposes her,but Sandhya refuses. Here,Gopal finds out that Shankar is in Hospital as Kailash and wants to get married to Sandhya.
For the sake of friendship,he pleads Sandhya to forget him and get married to Shankar.Sandhya refuses again. This talk is heard by Shankar.next day Shankar is found dead in the Hospital. He makes the biggest sacrifice for his friend Gopal.

Arun ji,

Thanks so much for the more detailed synopsis of this film.

Regarding this song, would you have information that says whether it was a background song, or otherwise, who performed it on screen.

Sudhir ji,
If I remember right it is a background song, but a Faqir is shown, though he is not lip synching. This is a scene when Shankar or Kailash(Abhi Bhatta.)hears the discussion between Sandhya and Gopal.he is very much disturbed that he has come between the lovers. Note the lines in the last stanza-tu duniya mein apna nishaan chhod jaa…. this probably to indicate the death of Shankar.

Thanks a lot for posting this song. I knew the song of course, but was not aware of the film or the music director. Would have assumed it to be Hemant Kumar composition, but Madan Mohan also had such a good Hemant Kumar song I would not have off hand realized. – AK
