Jeewan jyot jaley

Posted on: June 21, 2012

This article is written by Shekhar Gupta, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The Kishore Sahu directed Grahasthi (1963) was a Ashok Kumar-Nirupa Roy, Manoj Kumar-Rajshree starrer. Its four songs Jaa jaa re jaa deewaane jaa , Jaane teri nazron ne kyaa kar diyaa,Khile hain sakhi aaj phulwaa man mein , Zara dekh sanam mera jazba e dil (Grihasthi) plus a write up on the movie and all these songs is already on this blog.

What has been conspicuous by its absence so far is a little gem from this move – a Asha Bhonsle classic: Shakeel Badayuni’s “Jeewan jyot jale” on the well-known Telgu actress, the lovely Devika — with Nirupa Roy accompanying her on sitar and Gajanan Jagirdar (the father of the two sisters) in the frame enjoying this superb classical piece composed in raag Sohni by Ravi.

By the way, the Devika vocalizing this number is the same Devika who also features in the iconic bhajan Jai Raghunandan Jai Siyaram in Gharana (1961). The video from that movie as well as some more information about Devika is posted under “comments” on that page of this blog.

Now a word about the great Asha Bhonsle: I have always believed that despite her more popular and better known raunchy numbers, Ashaji is usually at her best in the classical numbers such as “Jeewan jyot jaley”.

The video clip of this number from the movie has only the first two stanzas. But fortunately we also have its full audio with the additional third stanza on YouTube.

GRAHASTI-1963 was a film by Gemini prodn,Madras and was directed by Vasan himself.Actually,it was a remake of popular Tamil film ‘Motor
Sundaram pillai’.
This Hindi version had dialogues by Pt.Mukhram Sharma and Music was by Ravi, who was a pet with South producers.
As expected from a gemini film, there were plenty of characters and many subplots, leaving ample opportunity for each emotion by turn. There was comedy with mehmood and shubha khote, tears with Nirupa Roy,love, dance and songs with manoj and sudesh kumar so on and so forth.
Ashok kumar a Motor garage owner in Delhi lives in Meerut with family. There is 1 wife,7 daughters and 1 son.Additionally there is his widowed sister and her son.
Ashok kumar or Harishchandra khanna lives in Delhi from Monday to Thursday for his business and Friday to sunday in Meerut with family. His elder daughters marriage has taken place, but she stays with them as her Husband is still studying. His son and one daughter as well as jaggu, son of His sister have fixed their marriages with their choices.Ashok kumar is happy when he learns this and calls all the concerned families together to finalize marriages.
On the appointed day,an old secret of Ashok kumar is known to everybody.During the younger days, when he was in Burma,he had married a girl.In the war bombings, she is declared dead and Ashok kumar returns to Delhi, marries Nirupa Roy and raises(a rather large) family. One day his first wife comes searching for him in Delhi. She is not dead.Ashok starts another secret family with her in Delhi and has a son,Sunder also from her.
Sunder arrives in Meetut and the story is known to all.The rest of the story is how the family reorients itself to the situation and how in the end everything is fine.
There are so many characters in the film, that it is difficult to keep a track of who is whose who.Mehmood,Shubha Khote and Ravi’s music save the film.
This film did not click too well that time.First, anybody having about 10 children in these days is unbearable, secondly, too many sub plots and characters, and thirdly it was an attempt to please every type of audience, but it ended with not satisfying any !

The actress, who is singing on screen, her name is Bharati Malvankar, a daughter of Marathi actor Damu Anna Malvankar. Bharati Malvankar later married to Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, borther of Lata.

Arunji, I vaguely remember seeing this movie on DD. I used to love these kind of movies, with lots of characters and confusion all around.

The song is really beautiful.

Arunkumar Deshmukh ji: Correction…. “Grihasti” was the original version…. “Motor Sundaram Pillai” (the Tamizh / Tamil movie) was remade from the Hindi movie…. For more information on “Motor Sundaram Pillai”, here’s the link to the article from “The Hindu”…. The article was written by noted film historian Randor Guy…. http://www.hindu.com/cp/2009/07/10/stories/2009071050401600.htm

One other piece of trivia related to “Motor Sundaram Pillai”:

The Geeta Dutt song “Ding Dong Ding Dong Ding Lala” was retained as is from the Hindi original “Grihasti” in “Motor Sundaram Pillai”…. It is the only Geeta Dutt song that I am aware of, in a Tamizh / Tamil movie….

It is the first instance of a Hindi song retained in tot from its original Hindi movie in a remade Tamizh movie….

It is also the first instance (that I am aware of) of a complete Hindi song in a Tamizh / Tamil movie…. The only other instance of a complete Hindi song in a Tamil / Tamizh movie (that I am aware of) is a Bhupinder solo “Kaise Kahoon Kuchh Keh Na Sakoon” from the 1981 movie “Nandu” (music by Ilaiyaraja)….

Here’s the link to the Tamizh / Tamil movie “Motor Sundaram Pillai” from Youtube…. The Geeta Dutt song starts at 2:14:08…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_IlX0JFDZw
