Song-Zindagi aaj mere naam se sharmaati hai(Son of India)(1962) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad
Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
zindagi aaj mere naam se sharmaati hai
zindagi aaj mere naam se sharmaati hai
apni haalat pe mujhe khud bhi hansi aati hai
zindagi aaj mere naam se sharmaati hai
ek gham chain se jeene nahin deta mujh ko
ek gham chain se jeene nahi deta mujh ko
ek uljhan hai jo aksar mujhe tadpaati hai
zindagi aaj mere naam se sharmaati hai
is tarah chhod ke nikla hoon main apni manzil
is tarah chhod ke nikla hoon main apni manzil
jaise hasrat koi seene se nikal jaati hai
zindagi aaj mere naam se sharmaati hai
raah chalte huye kuchh soch ke ruk jaata hoon
raah chalte huye kuchh soch ke ruk jaata hoon
har kadam par koi bhooli huyi yaad aati hai
zindagi aaj mere naam se sharmaati hai
apni haalat pe mujhe khud bhi hansi aati hai
zindagi aaj mere naam se sharmaati hai

You’re right, Prakashchandra-ji. He had changed his name to Shashi Rekhi. However, I’m not too sure if Shadhi Rekhi was his real name. Kanwaljeet’s best role was in ‘Shagun’ opposite Waheeda Rehman. It was in this movie that they fell in love and got married.

I remember watching ‘Son of India’ when I was in the VII Std. ‘Nanha munna rahi hoon…’ had been almost a national anthem for us kids!
I saw the movie years later and I realised what a wonderful actress Kumkum was! Such a pity she never got bigger meatier roles! Sajid Khan was an adopted son of the great man, Mehboob Khan and his wife Mehtab.
Simi is a mystery. She was introduced in this movie as ‘Simi Bakhthawar’! She vanished for some years before surfacing again as plain ‘Simi’ in ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa’. Somewhere along the line she added another handle to her name and ended up as Simi Garewal! 🙂
