Mast nazar ke paimaane chhalke

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
Many online sources of information indicate that Khaiyyaam made his debut in 1953 with the film ‘Footpath’. This information is erroneous. Zahur Khan, better known as Khaiyyaam, has actually been active as a music director since 1947/48. During the years from 1947 to 1953, he was using a different pseudonym. In this period, he composed music under the name of ‘Sharma ji’. He once shared in an interview, the reason for why he used the name ‘Sharma ji’. His strong interest was music and he moved to Bombay to make a career in films. The years of 1946-47 were very intense with the issues of independence and also the partition of India. A deep divide had occurred between the communities, and a large contingent of film wallahs opted to move to Pakistan.
It was in these circumstances that Zahur Khan landed up in Bombay, not opting to go to Pakistan, but to be here and make a career in India. As a fresh starter, he was advised not to use his real name, by the producers and the production companies that he approached for work. Under advise, he took up the pseudonym ‘Sharma ji’ and for the first five years of his career, he composed using this name. In fact, during this time, he also teamed up with another music director with the name Rehman Verma, and the duo composed music for some films under the name of ‘Sharma ji-Verma ji. Then in 1953, changed to another pseudonym – Khaiyyaam, when he composed music for ‘Footpath’. After that, he has not changed it for the remainder of his career.
(NOTE: Rehman Verma eventually migrated to Pakistan sometimes in 1950-51, where he continued to compose music for films.)
‘Taatar Ka Chor’ is Khaiyyaam’s third film as music director, i.e. after ‘Footpath’ and ‘Dhobi Doctor’. This film is a costume drama, produced in 1955, under the banner of MP Pictures, Bombay, by Darshan. And it is directed by Majnu, a person who is better known for his comedy roles in films like ‘Bhaagam Bhaag’ and ‘Hum Sab Chor Hain‘ etc. The star cast of the film includes Shyama, Mahipal, Vijay Lakshmi, Chandrashekhar, Maruti, Yashodhara Katju, Gope, Sheikh, Indira, Tuntun, Rajan Kapoor, Shetty, Mohd Ali, Verma, Sattar, Hanuman, Rafiq, Shafi, Ramavtar, Zakhmi, Kamal etc. The songs are written by Prem Dhawan, and the music, of course is by Khaiyyaam. The singing voice is that of Geeta Dutt. Only the audio of this song is available, so it is difficult to comment on the on screen presentation. I would request other readers to please add more information about the film and this song.
Enjoy this wonderfully lilting dance song in the voice, that is just the right voice for this song.
mast nazar ke paimaane chhalke
ulfat ka pyaar bharaa jaam zaraa thhaam le
The goblets of playful eyes
Overflow (with wine of love)
Come, grasp this drink
Of love and affection
chori chori nazren churaanaa
aji seekhey ho kahaan se ye bahaanaa
karo na ji hum se waade kal ke
Glancing away in a sly manner
Say, wherefrom have you learnt these deceptions
O come now, do not deflect me
With promises of tomorrow
jhuki jhuki aankhon ke ishaare
kabhi samjho sanam mere pyaare
aayeen tere dar pe bahaaren chal ke
Oh for once, do comprehend
The hints passed on by lowered glances
The spring has walked its way
To your doorstep
kaali kaali zulfen bulaayen
aa ke sun zaraa dil ki sadaayen
jalwe hain saare pal do pal ke
These dark flowing tresses beckon you
Come near and listen to the murmurs of the heart
(O be aware)
All the glory (of youth) and good fortune
Are but, for a moment or two

Sudhir ji,
TATAR KA CHOR-55 was directed by MAJNU.
His real name was Harold Lewis. He appeared in his first Film “MAJNU” in the year 1935 and since then he was known as Majnu. He was a comedy actor and had paired with I.S.Johar in a dozen or so films,in the style of Bob Hope-Bing Crosby style.
In fact in the film ‘Hum sab chor hain’,they even did the then famous YOGI DANCE (a favourite of Bob Hope-Bing Crosby jodi),in the song ‘Humko hansate dekh zamana jalta hai…..’
Majnu had been associated with Roop Shorey in Lahore before partition. After Partition when Roop Shorey moved his production house to Bombay,he brought with him many actors, technicians and also MD Vinod with him to Bombay.Majnu also came here with him.
After the success of ‘EK THI LADKI’-49,Roop Shorey never came out of its influence. He considered I.S.Johar and Majnu as a lucky Mascot for him and they featured in almost all his films afterwards.
In the direction field,he was brought by Shorey himself. As a Director, some of his movies were Papi,Badnami,Zamane ki hawa,Son of Alibaba,Malika,Baghi Sardar,Basre ki Hoor,Tatar ka chor etc.
He acted in about 100 films, but he was NOT in BHAGAM BHAG.
