Aaj ko junli raat maa
Posted July 12, 2012
on:Today (12 july) is the death anniversary of Rajendra Kumar. On this occasion I have several songs to discuss, time permitting.
Here is a song from “Talaash” (1969). This dance song is sung by Lata and Rafi alongwith chorus. It is picturised on Sharmila Tagore, Rajendra Kumar and several dancers including Chaand, Jayshree T, Rani etc.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.
The audio and video of this song differe somewhat. The lyrics contain all the words that are there in either of the versions. For instance, the movie version has a few words uttered by R D Burman, which are not there in the audio version.
Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

I think O.P.Ralhan got an obsession for opulent -garish,expensive,colourful sets,Helenji(sometimes replaced with Padma Khanna,Shahsikala & Mumtaz),club or cabret songs, and adivaasi group dance songs like this Talash song.
I don`t know more about Gehra daag(1963),But Mumtaz is there also.
But the above mentioned things are there in Movie produced and directed by O.P.Ralhanji:
Phool aur patthar(shashikala-2 seductive songs-zindagi mein pyaar karna seekh le, sheeshe se pee yaa paimaane se pee)
Talash(1969)(Adivasi group dance song,Helen`s 2 songs-kar le pyaar kale & mera kyaa sanam,Madhumati classical dance, aaj ko junili raatmaa)
Hulchul(1971)(Helenji`s dances only for lenghthy instrumental music)
Bandhe haath(1973)(Mumtaz got atleast 2 cabret type of Adivasi or fisherman type dances with elaborate sets-O maajhi & Ye kaun aaj aayaa mera dil chhuraane)
Paapi(1977)(shamma jale ya na jale on zeenath and another elaborate dance sequence featuring Padma khanna)
Either he show Meena Kumari singing before Bhagwan`s idol or he shows them with minimum outfits, gyrating to the musical beats seducing the hero or villains
.
But music lovers(like me) got their “Paisaa vasool” by listening to those seductive or bhajan songs sung by asha ji or lata ji. 🙂
To tell you the truth, I really love those kind of (Colourful) Eastman colour dances and dance songs of those days.

‘Kitni akeli kitni tanhaa si lagi’ is a song i discovered when its remix hit the charts some years ago. That song was shot as a club song(without dance). I just liked it so much, and some time aga i found this song again. In the film it is a background song. Cant say i liked it much, though. It is so much better to hear. Give me SDB song anytime, again with majrooh.

Talaash had lovely songs, and the movie also was a big hit, a usual Jubliee Kumar feature. 🙂
