Kyun baje hriday veena ke taar

Posted on: July 14, 2012

Today (14 july) is the death anniversary of Leela Chitnis (9 september 1909- 14 july 2003). She was one of the pioneers of Hindi cimema during its early days. She was a well educated lady from a respectable family who entered movie world which was till then considered the preserve of courtesans. Her association with Bombay Talkies, where she forged a popular pair with Ashok Kumar gave us some memorable movies as well as memorable songs.

She was the first Indian actress who endorsed the soap Lux in 1941. Prior to that Lux would only approach Hollwood actresses to endorse this soap. I think those were the days when actors considered it an honour to be associated with such endorsing and they did it for free.

Subsequently, Leela Chitnis created the archtypical image of suffering fimy Maa in Hindi movies. That was she was the prototype of Filmy Maa in HIndi movies. Nirupa Roy etc followed on her foot steps in the coming decades. 🙂

In her personal life, she was not like her Maa image of course. She dared to divorce her husband when such a step by an Indian woman was considered unimaginable. She brought up her four kids and later on she settled in US with her children where he breathed her last on 14 july 2003.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Kangan” (1939). This song is sung by Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis and it is picturised on them as well.

This movie had two lyricists and two music directors. In the past I have discussed songs from this movie which were written by Pradeep and composed by saraswati Devi. In this case, Pt Narottam Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ramchandra Pal.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

murjhaayi

kya rooth gayi ho pyaari
kya rooth gayi ho pyaari
tum badey nithhur girdhaari
tum badey nithhur girdhaari

ab maaro na taanon ki maar
ab maaro na taanon ki maar
murjhaayi

aayi bahaar

kyun chhupi kunj mein
baahar kyun nahin aati
kyun chhupi kunj mein
baahar kyun nahin aati
dil dhadke ghanshyaam
dil dhadke ghanshyaam
aati main sharmaayi
aati main sharmaayi

na tarsaao
na tarsaao
aayi bahaar
aayi bahaar
aayi bahaar
aayi bahaar
