Gagan ke chanda na poochh hamse

Posted on: July 24, 2012

The month of July is a bonanza as far as anniversaries of film personalities are concerned. Today (24 july) is the birthday of Manoj Kumar.

Manoj Kumar who played Bharat in his movies beginning from “Upkaar” (1966) onwards had a simplistic “East is good west is bad” and “poor is good rich is bad” messages in his movies. And there were considerable number of takers for such messages those days.

Here is a song from a Manoj Kumar movie of pre Bharat days. This song is from “Apne Huye Paraaye” (1964). This movie was a Mars and Movies Production. It was produced and directed by Ajit Kumar Chakraborty. The movie had Manoj Kumar, Mala Sinha, Shashikala, Agha, Sunder, Lalita Pawar, Dulari, Chand Burque, Iftekar, Savitri, Ramayan Tiwari, Naina, Padma Kumari,Pratap Singh, Joshi, Khan, etc in it.

Manoj Kumar mostly lip synced in the voices of Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor and Rafi, but here he lip syncs in an unusual voice. It is Subir Sen who has given playback for Manoj Kumar in this song.

This song in fact is a duet and Lata also sings this song and Mala Sinha Shashikala lip syncs in Lata’s voice.

Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Song-Gagan ke chanda na pooch hamse (Apne Huye Paraaye)(1964) Singer-Lata, Subir Sen, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

gagan ke chanda
na poochh humse
kahaan hoon main dil
mera kahaan hai
gagan ke chanda
na poochh humse
kahaan hoon main dil
mera kahaan hai
kisiki chaahat mein kho gaye hum
na apna dil hai,
na apni jaan hai

gagan ke chandaa

nazar se nazar milke sharmaa rahi hai
har ek raaz jhuk kar kahe jaa rahi hai
nazar se nazar milke sharmaa rahi hai
har ek raaz jhuk kar kahe jaa rahi hai

ghadi ye mohabbat ke iqraar ki hai
rut pyaar ki hai ye,
shab pyaar ki hai ae
shab pyaar ki hai
kisike roke nahin rukega
ke ye bahaaron ka kaarwaan hai

gagan ke chanda
na poochh humse
kahaan hoon main dil
mera kahaan hai
gagan ke chanda

kisse hai khabar hum
kidhar jaa rahe hain
bas ek doosre ke
kareeb aa rahe hain
kisse hai khabar hum
kidhar jaa rahe hain
bas ek doosre ke
kareeb aa rahe hain
mohabbat ka jo geet
hum gaa rahe hain
wohi aaj taare bhi
dohraa rahe hain
dohraa rahe hain

jawaan hai dil
zindagi jawaan hai
jawaan zameen,
aasmaan jawaan hai
gagan ke chanda
na poochh humse
kahaan hoon main dil
mera kahaan hai
gagan ke chanda

na tum ab rahe tum
na hum ab rahe hum
dil -o- jaan se aaj
ek ho gaye hum
na tum ab rahe tum
na hum ab rahe hum
dil -o- jaan se aaj
ek ho gaye hum

na rokega ab hamko
zaalim zamaanaa
ghutegaa na saanson mein
apnaa taraanaa
apna taraanaa
yahaan na aayenge jalnewaale
nayee ye duniya nayaa jahaan hai
gagan ke chanda
na poochh humse
kahaan hoon main dil
mera kahaan hai
gagan ke chandaa

Lovely song! It’s always a pleasure listening to Subir Sen. By the way, It’s Shashikala, and not Mala Sinha, who lip sync’s Lata’s voice.
The Manoj Kumar-Mala Sinha-Shashikala trio acted in two more movies: ‘Hariyali aur Raasta’ and ‘Himalay ki Godmein’.

Well, Hemantda sing for Manojsaab in Maa beta (1962).
In mid 60’s Lata and Rafi had discord.
he possesses a rich expressiveness of ecstatic voice.
