“Mela” (1948) was a Wadia Films Presentation. It was produced by S U Sunny and Hila Wadia. The movie was directed by S U Sunny. The movie had Dilip Kumar, Nargis, Jeevan, Roopkamal, Amar, Rehman, Baby Zubaida, Noorjehan, Chandabai, Allaudin, Khalil, Abbas, Maqbul Jr., Ghulam Mohmed Jr. etc in it.
The movie was a musical blockbuster. Five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
Here is another song from this movie. The song is sung by Shamshad Begam. The song is picturised on Nargis and Dilip Kumar. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.
This is a special song for this blog as it is the 200th song of Shamshad Begam in the blog. Shamshad Begam, who easily one of the seniormost of all singers who is still around. She was a protege of Ghulam Haider and she got her first break as a playback singer under him in “Khazaanchi” (1941). Later on, Naushad used her voice as his main female playback singer is late 1940s. O P Nayyar used her voice in several of his compositions in 1950s. Her voice was crystal clear and one could rarely get stuck while noting down the lyrics of her songs.
She was conferred with Padmabhushan, one of the highest civilian awards of Indian government, in 2009.
Two hundred songs of Shamshad Begam in one place ! I think we in this blog can be justifiably proud of achieving this feat.
The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)
pardes balam tum jaaoge
kaho meri qasam kab aaoge
pardes balam tum jaaoge
ho o o
kaho meri qasam kab aaoge
pardes balam tum jaaoge
kaho meri qasam kab aaoge
pardes balam tum jaao ge
ho o o
kaho meri qasam kab aaoge
ho o o o
ghanghor ghata jab chhaayegi
ho chhaayegi
saawan ka sandesa laayegi
ho laayegi
aur yaad hamaari aayegi
ho aayegi
jab paas na hum ko paaoge
phir nainon se jal barsaaoge
pardes balam tum jaaoge
ho o o
kaho meri qasam kab aaoge
ho o o o
ambwa pe koyal jab bolegi
ho bolegi
meri chhoti si duniya dolegi
ho dolegi
chhup chhup ke yeh birhan ro legi
ho ro legi
is dil ko jo thais lagaaoge
dekho preet kiye pachhtaaoge
pardes balam tum jaa ge
ho o o
kaho meri qasam kab aaoge
ho o o o
bagiyan mein pawan jab ghoomegi
ho ghoomegi
har phool ka mukhda choomegi
ho choomegi
hans hans ke jawaani jhoomegi
ho jhoomegi
more nainon mein tum bas jaaoge
mora naazuk sa dil tadpaaoge
pardes balam tum jaaoge
ho o o
kaho meri qasam kab aaoge

In spite of successes of Shamshadji, somewhere the word “challenge” is there.
But you did it. Congratulation .
Another great song from those good old days…Love all the memories .. I hope she grows in popularity for many years to come.
I wish her to stay around for years to come.
In my heart I feel secure when I see Lataji, Ashaji, Sumanji, Shamshadji, Mubarakji, Mannadey saab…around us. I just I don’t like to think other way for million years.

Shamshad Begum was such a versatile singer. Give her any song and she would sing it effortlessly! ‘Mother India’s “Pee ke ghar aaj pyari dulhaniya chali…” still leaves me in tears.
“Booj mera kya naam re, nadi kinare gaon re…” from ‘CID’ is so full of ‘masti’
