This post is, thanks to the film music program Rangoli, that is aired on doordarshan every Sunday morning. The program that I saw on the morning of 25th October, featured songs filmed on Raveena Tandon – an actress of the 1990s. The program had songs featuring Raveena with almost all the actors she had acted with and not necessarily dance numbers, there were romantic songs too.
The song with this post is from the 2004 released, Madhur Bhandarkar directed “Aan: Men At Work”. The film was produced by Firoz A. Nadiadwala. The film had Shatrughan Sinha leading a cast of Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, Preethi Jhangiani, Jackie Shroff, Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Irrfan Khan, Manoj Joshi, Rahul dev, Vijay Raaz, Ravi Kishan, Ajinkya Deo, Rajpal Yadav, Milind Gunaji and many many more known faces in guest & special appearances. Plus there was Gauhar Khan and Reema Sen in two dance numbers.
The film was the story on the lives DCP Patnaik (Akshay Kumar) and his team (Shatrughan Sinha, Paresh Rawal, Suniel Shetty). It was the story of their fight against corrupt politicians and mafia rule in Mumbai city. It had Raveena playing Roshni Varma, businessman Gautam Walia’s (Jackie Shroff) keep. Preethi Jhangiani (Janki Naik) played Suniel Shetty’s (Appa Kadam Naik) wife & Lara Dutta (Kiran) played Hari Om Patnaik’s (Akshay Kumar) fiancé.
The film had music by Anu Malik with Dev Kohli, Tejpal kaur & Sameer as the lyricist. Sonu Nigam, Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal, Shreya Ghoshal, Udit Narayan, Shabbir Kumar, Sarika Kapoor, Ujwala, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Alka Yagnik, Shaswati Phukan, Zubeen Garg & Sunidhi Chauhan as playback singers for the eight songs.
‘Aan: Men at Work” (2004) is making its debut on the blog with a song that is sung by Udit Narayan, Shabbir Kumar, Sarika Kapoor, & Ujwala. On screen, we can see Appa Naik trying to appease his wife Janaki. Hari Om Patnaik is seen spending quality time with Kiran. Plus, we can also see Roshni Varma coming face-to-face with senior inspector Vikram Singh (Shatrughan Sinha) in a supermarket. The song is after Vikram Singh has asked Roshni to ponder about her status in the life of Gautam Walia and also about how the businessman’s work is affecting the lives of the citizens. Vikram has asked Roshni to divulge whatever she knows about Walia.
“Aan: Men at Work” came at a time when Raveena Tandon had started experimenting with her roles. She was playing serious characters as in ‘Shool’ (1999), ‘Daman’ (2001), ‘Aks’ (2001) ‘Satta’ (2003) along with acting in commercial films like ‘Akhiyon Se Goli Maare’. Kahin Pyar Na Ho Jaaye’, ‘L.O.C. Kargil’ etc. Raveena is the daughter of filmmaker Ravi Tandon & Veena (her name is a combination of her parents name). She married film distributor Anil Thadani at the peak of her career, and has been seen intermittently since 2006 on-screen in films, as a judge on reality shows on television.
A word about Shabbir Kumar. He is a playback singer, notable for his work in Bollywood. He became famous as an imitator of Mohammed Rafi, and sang several hit songs in the 1980s. He was born on 26th October 1954, in Baroda as the eldest of ten children and had no formal training in music. He became interested in singing as a child, and gained attention for imitating the voice of Mohammed Rafi. By his early 20s, his stage shows became popular in Gujarat. He personally met Rafi in 1972 at a recording session, and drew a pencil sketch of Rafi. In 1974, he met Rafi at a stage show in Ahmedabad, where he was introduced as the “local Rafi”. He claims that when police attempted to disperse the crowd at Rafi’s funeral in 1980, his wristwatch and pen fell into Rafi’s open grave and were buried there.
Music director Usha Khanna noticed Shabbir Kumar, and called him for an audition, where she asked him to sing two of Rafi’s songs – ‘Teri Galiyon Mein’ and ‘Main Yeh Soch Kar’. She offered him a song in the 1981 movie ‘Tajurba’. Usha Khanna recommended him to fellow music directors getting him films like ‘Coolie’, ‘Betaab’, ‘Meri Jung’, ‘Pyar Jhukta Nahin’ and many more. He claims to have sung atleast 3500 songs for about 270 movies. He is also a painter & sketcher.
