The 1950s was the decade when Sur Saraswati Lata Mangeshkar showered scores of melodious gems on the music lovers which have defied time to linger in their memory like pangs of the first-love.
One such number is from the 1951 production of Bakshi Brothers’ Khazana directed by M Sadiq. C Ramchandra’s superlative composition “Aye chaand pyaar mera tujhse ye keh raha hai”, shot on arguably the most beautiful leading lady ever to grace the Indian silver screen — Mumtaz Jahan Begum Dehlavi, better known as the Bollywood Venus, Madhubala. Her cruelly early demise in her prime at 36 in February 1969 was a terrible blow to the industry.
Madhubala was paired in this movie with Nasir Khan, the lesser-known late younger brother of the redoubtable Yusuf Khan (the thespian Dilip Kumar). One of Lataji’s sweet duets with Late Mohammed Rafi from this movie, “Mujhe tumse bahut hai pyaar”, is already on this blog with a brief write up on Nasir Khan by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh posted under comments here.
Unfortunately, no video clip is available on the Internet of this or the other Khazana (1951) numbers. However, Rajinder Krishan’s poignant lyrics seem to indicate that this surpassingly sweet dirge is the protagonist’s desperate ‘arz’, i.e., entreaty to the waxing moon to stop short of entering the 14th day, i.e., chaudhvin, when presumably her beloved is condemned to meet his end (nikhregi chaudhvin ko jis dam teri jawaani, mit jaayegi jahaan se us din meri kahaani).
Only a special tuning between the diva par excellence and the composer-at-his best could have possibly produced such a superlative melody!
Song-Ae chaand pyaar mera tujhse ye keh raha hai (Khazaana)(1951) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-C Ramchandra
Lyrics
aye chaand pyaar mera
tujhse ye keh raha hai
aye chaand pyaar mera
tujhse ye keh raha hai
tu bewafa na hona
tu bewafa na hona,
duniya to bewafa hai
aye chaand pyaar meraa
tujhse ye keh raha hai
aye chaand
nikhregi chaudhvin ko
jis dam teri jawaani
mit jaayegi jahaan se
us din merii kahaani
sab aasre to chhoote
sab aasre to chhoote,
ik tera aasra hai
aye chaand pyaar mera
tujhse ye keh raha hai
aye chaand
kee hai agar muhabbat
toone kabhi kisi se
o aasamaan ke pyaare
phir arz hai tujhi se
poora kabhi na hona
poora kabhi na hona
ye meri iltaja hai
aye chaand pyaar mera
tujhse ye keh raha hai
aye chaand
