Maujon ki doli chali re

Posted on: August 5, 2012

I was aware of “Jeewan Jyoti” (1953) starring Shammi Kapoor and Chand Usmani in it but I did not know that a movie of the same title was also released in 1976.

“Jeewan Jyoti” (1976) was produced by A V M Productions. It was produced by M Balu and M Sarvanan and directed by Murugan Kumaran. The movie had Vijay Arora, Bindiya Goswami, A.K.Hangal, Dulari, Jayamalini, Om Shiv puri, Rakesh Pandey, Satyen Kappu, Dinesh Hingoo, Sulochana Chatterjee, Ritu Kamal, Baby MunMun, Master Raju Shrestha, Bhanumati, Bheeshma etc in it.

Both movies not only shared their title but also their box office fates. Both these movies fell flat at the box office. Shammi Kapoor, the lead actor of the 1953 version went on to become a legend later on but the same cannot be said about the lead actor of the 1976 movie.

Both these movies had music that suffered as a result of the failure of the movies but they deserved to be known much better than remain obscure. “Jewwan jyoti” (1953) had music by S D Burman and “Jeewan Jyoti” (1976) had music by Salil Chaudhary, musical geniuses both.

I have discussed two songs from “Jeewan Jyoti” (1953) but none so far from “Jeewan Jyoti” (1976). Here is the first song from “Jeewan Jyoti” (1976). I heard this song for the first time only just now, and after listening to this song a couple of times, this song grew upon me.

The song is sung by Kishore Kumar and it is picturised on Vijay arora and Bindiya Goswami. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist.

The video of the song is nearly four minutes long and most people would assume this to be the full song. But Prakashchandra, who sent me the lyrics of this song, is not content with this. He informed that this song had an additional stanza in it and that he was unable to find the audio link of this full song.

I wonder how Prakashchandra sent me the lyrics of even the additional stanza if he could not locate the link to the video link. May be he remembered the lyrics from memory. After listening to the song from the video, I could not help but locate the full audio of this song too. I have provided the full audio link of this song too.

Song-Maujon ki doli chali re (Jeewan Jyoti)(1976) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Salil Chaudhary

Lyrics

maujon ki doli
chali re ae ae
chali pardes chali
bagiya se babul ki
todke piya le chalaa
prem kali re
maujon ki doli
chali re ae ae
chali pardes chali
bagiya se babul ki
todke piya le chala
prem kali re
maujon ki doli
chali re ae ae

panghat tak aayeen
sakhiyaan saheliyaan
panghat tak aayeen
sakhiyaan saheliyaan
reh gayeen peepal ki
chhaaon mein
sab paheliyaan
chhoot gayee woh gali re
maujon ki doli
chali re ae ae
chali pardes chali
bagiya se babul ki
tod ke piya le chala
prem kali re
maujon ki doli
chali re ae ae

nadiyaa dheere baho
dulhan sharmaaye
nadiyaaa dheere baho
dulhan sharmaaye
mann hichkaule khaaye
ghoonghat na khul jaaye
pawan badi manchal ire
maujon ki doli
chali re ae
chali pardes chali
bagiya se babul ki
todke piya le chala
prem kali re
maujon ki doli
chali re ae ae

ho o o
bindiya aisi lagi
jaise koyee jadoo jagaa
bindiya aisi lagi
jaise koyee jadoo jagaa
gora mukh thodaa saa
dekha toh bas aisa laga
bhor bhayee rain dhalee re
maujon ki doli chali re ae ae
chali pardes chali
bagiyaa se babul ki
tod ke piya le chala
prem kali re
maujon ki doli chali re ae ae

Wow! Am hearing this song after 36 years!!! I remember seeing this movie when it was released – and that was it. After that I’d completely forgotten about it. Now when I saw the title of the song, it immediately registered for me.

Thanks so much for bringing this back in my mind. It is always a wonderful feeling to suddenly listen to a song you last heard decades ago. And this is such a nice song too. Thanks to Prakashchandra as well.

Thanks Atulji
This is my favourite Sunday afternoon song.(Aap bhi iss gaane ko Ravivaar ke dophar hi post kiyaa)

I regularly(atleast once in a month)listen to this song on Sunday afternoons.
I do have a audio track of this song(in the form of cassette), which contains only 2 stanzas.
But while listening to this song through Vividhbharathi Radio station, once I have jotted down the lyrics of 3rd stanza .(That`s how I got the additional rare 3rd stanza of this beautiful song)

Anyways, you have added more colour to my otherwise lazy Sunday afternoon. Thanks again.

Regards & love you
Prakash

I forgot to add that I like Kishore ji`s voice very much, in these type of songs,
Reasons I don`t know.
While singing this song, I find certain type of “serenity” in his voice, (kyaa bolte hain ussko “tehraav” Am I right ?)which suits to me very much.

There is a bengali song “keno kichhu katha balo na” in the same tune sung by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by Salil Choudhury, it’s non-filmy song. Being a bengali and an admirer of Salil Choudhury’s creation I listened to that song many many times but never heard the hindi version. It’s so fascinating as I started to listen to this song, it seemed familiar to me but couldn’t find the reason…..then suddenly the bengali song came to my mind life a flash :-)) Anyway thanks a lot for sharing it.
