Dil hai haazir leejiye le jaaiye

Posted on: August 19, 2012

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

August 19th is the 36th death anniversary of the Sahitya Akademy Award winner for Urdu poetry and Hindi film lyricist Jan Nisar Akhtar. In his last birth anniversary on February 14th, I had covered his profile while discussing the song main abhi ghair hoon penned by him. Suffice it to say here that such a talented Urdu poet born in the family of Urdu scholars and poets was not as successful as a lyricist as his contemporaries like Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi and Shakeel Badayuni. From what I gathered from various websites, he appeared to be surviving more on his shayaris than from writing songs for Hindi films. He was wellknown for his repartee through his shers (couplets). During his filmy career of over two decades, he wrote only around 150 songs for the Hindi films.

As a tribute to Jan Nisar Akhtar on the occasion of his death anniversary, I was looking for a ghazal from films to reflect his liking for shayaris. Last week, I came across a ghazal ‘dil hai haazir leejiye le jaaiye’ written by him for the film SAJJO RANI (1976). The song is sung by the famous thumri and dadra singer Shobha Gurtu and it is set to music by Sapan-Jagmohan.

The film was produced and directed by Govind Saraiya who had earlier directed the film ’Saraswatichandra’(1968). The star cast included Rehana Sultan, Romesh Sharma, Ramesh Dev, Sajjan, Urmila Bhat, Sumati Gupte, Krishnakant etc. I have not seen the film but have watched the video clippings of most of its songs. The film is based on a story about a courtesan’s daughter(Rehana Sultan) who shuns her traditional profession of a courtesan and marries a young man (Romesh Sharma) from a respectable family. But her past threatens her married life. At the end , however, they overcome all the problems created by the society at large.

The film failed miserably at the box office. All the song picturisation of the film were sloppy and video quality is not so good. So it is better to listen to the audio clip to enjoy this ghazal than the video clips.

Shobha Gurtu has rendered this ghazal in thumri style. I found that the tune of this ghazal was the same as used in yoon na reh reh kar hamen tarsaaiye written by Sagar Nizami and sung by Master Madan. To my mind, it appears that even musical notes of both the ghazals are matching. Another interesting thing I note in this context is that Jan Nisar Akhtar’s ghazal looks like a ‘jawaab-e-ghazal’ to Sagar Nizami’s ghazal. Within my limited knowledge of Urdu, I guess that Jan Nisar Akhtar’s ghazal takes an opposite view of what was implicit in Sagar Nizami’s ghazal. To quote one example, Nizami’s ‘yoon na reh reh kar hamen tarsaaiye’ has been answered by Jan Nisar Akhtar’s ‘aur bhi tarsaaiye tadpaaiye’.

Listen first to Feroze Nizami’s ghazal in Master Madan’s voice and then follow it up with listening to Jan Nissar Akhtar’s ghazal in Shobha Ghurtu’s voice. I am sure, listeners would get a feel of a virtual mushaira competition.

My compliments to Sri Sadanand Kamath for selecting and posting this enchanting ghazal sung by Shobha Gurtu. Sri Kamath’s knowledge of Urdu is by no means limited as he has been able to bring out the mood difference between this ghazal and the other more famous ghazal sung by Master Madan.

The last sher is quite difficult to hear under the dialogue. What I have heard is,

Dhoondh hi lenge koi apna Khuda,
Kab talak patthar se sar takraaiye.

-Pratap
