Dost kahaan koi tum sa

Posted on: September 3, 2012

“Khamoshi”(1969) was a Geetanjali Production movie. It was produced by Hemant Kumar and directed by Asit Sen (director and not actor). The movie had Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, waheeda Rehman, Lalita Pawar, Ajit Chatterji, Iftekhar, Tarun Ghosh, Nazir Hussain, Snehlata, Anwar, Deven Verma, Naina etc in it.

This movie had some fantastic songs in it. There were four songs in it according to Hindi Film Geet Kosh, though the movie also had a small song by Aarti Mukherji which is not mentioned by HFGK. According to HFGK, the movie had four songs in it. Three of those songs, (plus the above mentioned song by Aarti Mukherji) have been discussed in ther blog in the past.

Here is the final song from this movie. This song is sung by Manna Dey. Gulzar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hemant Kumar.

I have only been able to locate the audio of this saong. I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us how and on whom this song is picturised.

Song-Dost kahaan koi tum sa (Khamoshi)(1969) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-Hemant Kumar

dost kahaan koi tumsaa
tumsaa nahin koi mister
kabhi tum darling kabhi mehboobaa
kabhi tum bholi-bhaali sister
dost kahaan koi tumasaa
tumsaa nahin koi sister

jaane do

ek ghoont mein paarvati tum
ek ghoont mein chandramukhi
ek ghoont mein paarvati tum
ek ghoont mein chandramukhi
ek baar lag jaao galey se
devdaas hain bade dukhi
oon oon oon
ek boond mein Churchill ho gaye
ek boond mein Hitler
ae ae ae ae ae
dost kahaan koi tumasaa
tumasaa nahin koi mister

rum chadhe to gham utrenge
whisky se dukh khiskee
rum chadhe to gham utrenge
whisky se dukh khiskee
gin se bhaage bhoot nagodaa
tum kiske ham kiske
raat ko pii ke boriyaa dhoondhhen
din ko dhoondhe bistar
waah haa
dost kahaan koi tumsaa
tumsaa nahin koi mister

kiski aankh kaa aansoo hai ye
tair rahaa hai pyaale mein
kiski aankh kaa aansoo hai ye
tair rahaa hai pyaale mein
doob naa jaaye andhere mein
khencho ise ujaale mein
ye kiske sindoor se maine
ye kiske sindoor se maine
daag liyaa hai dil par
dost kahaan koi tumsaa

Could be Anwar Husein; I faintly remember.

I think I have seen the song picturtisation , It must have been picturised on Deven varma ???? Am I right???

If my memory serves me right, this song has been picturised(in mental hospital corridors) on mental patient Deven verma who was after his dose of alcohal and his bottle. The video was there at youtube, but ab laakh koshish karo, woh video link mil nahin rahaa 😦

Your memory is serving you right. (at least so far 🙂 ) I have the dvd and it has this song. The picturisation is just what you have mentioned. Deven Verma with his bottle in the mental asylum.

Thank you Khyati ji for the confirmation.

Old VHS tapes of this film would most likely have this song. Unfortunately, the copies going around right now used the chopped up VCD version. To get a sense of what the picturization might be, here is the Bengali song (Emon bondhu aar ke achhe) from the original Bengali film ‘Deep Jwele Jai’, which is identical to the Hindi version.

Whether the actor who lip syncs for this Bengali song is
Anil chatterjee ???,
who acted
in Hindi movie Faraar(Old)(with Shabnam-music Hemant kumar and produced by I think Hemant kumar himself)

in Doordarshan hindi serial “Naqab”(in the role of an ageing famous movie actor)

in Amol Palekar`s Ankahee(with Deepti Naval)

yes, it was Anil Chatterjee indeed.

Found video link for the song picturised on Deven Varma
