Today (3 september) is the death anniversary of Meena Shorey. it was on this day in 1989 that Meena Shorey breathed her last.
Born Khursheed Jehan, Meena Shorey she got her first break in Sohrab Modi’s “Sikandar” (1941). Sohrab Modi also gave her the screen name of Meena.
The world was at her feet in 1949 when the much loved movie “Ek Thhi Ladki” (1949) was released. This movie, which had the timeless classic song Laara lappa laara lappa laai rakhdaa made Meena Shorey an overnight sensation. She married Roop K Shorey, the producer of this movie after the release of this movie. It was her second marriage. Her earlier marriage to Al Nasir, her co actor of “Phir Milenge” (1943) was shortlived because of Al Nasir’s wayward ways.
Roop Shorey then produced “Dholak”(1950), which was another box office winner with outstanding music. It was then followed by “Ek Thi Reeta” (1953).
It was during mid 1950s that the Shoreys were invited to come to Pakistan and make a remake of Hindi hit movie “Mr and Mrs 55”. During her stay in Pakistan, she received so much adulation that she decided to migrate to Pakistan and make her career there, despite opposition from her husband. This decision of hers proved counterproductive in the long run. Her career in Pakistani movies was not a patch on what she had achieved in India with the movies produced by her producer husband. Her profession and personal lives in Pakistan were nothing to write home about. She led a miserable existence during the last years of her life. She died in penury and anonymity on 3 september 1989.
