Greetings and best wishes to Asha ji, on her 79th birth anniversary today (8th September).
Twenty seven years after her debut (in 1948), here is a sampling of her voice that we all are much more familiar with. Also listen to the other post from 1949, and savor the difference in the voice. And wonder.
70s was the decade of RD Burman, and yes, Asha was the top singer in the Hindi film industry. This song, though, is from the baton of the music director duo, Sapan Jagmohan. The film is ‘Kaagaz Ki Naao’ (1975), produced and directed by BR Ishara, under his own banner, BRI Arts, Bombay. The film was the debut vehicle for the leading pair, Sarika and Raj Kiran. Sarika has appeared earlier in child roles. This film is her first role as the leading lady, opposite the newcomer Raj Kiran. The other actors appearing in this film include Pradeep Kumar, Aruna Irani, Helen, IS Johar, Paaro, Johnny Whisky, Dileep Dutt, Shyam Dubey, Amal Sen, Hamid, Asha Sharma, Rajni Verma, Hardeep, Maniyar, Arbind Dasgupta, Manhar Desai, Asit Sen, Manmohan Krishan, Reena Ghosh, Master Mitthoo etc.
The lyrics are from the pen of Naqsh Llayalpuri. A song that is short and sweet, narrating the tales of waiting for the loved one. In solitude, the lady confesses being lost in the thoughts of her lover. No one to share these moments with her, but there is the mirror, that silently watches her reverie, and smiles. Such a pretty thought, such a stirring scenario, “. . . Aaina Dekh Kar Muskuraata Rahaa”.
Enjoy this lovely piece of music – Sapan Jagmohan, Naqsh Llayalpuri and the voice of Asha. An endearing song.
main tumhaare khayaalon mein khoi rahi
aainaa dekh kar muskuraata rahaa
jaane kya soch kar mein ne angdaai li
aainaa dekh kar muskuraata rahaa
Thinking of you
Lost in your dreams
With only the mirror for my company
Smiling, very knowlingly
I stretched myself, seeking comfort
And the mirror watched me
Smiling, very knowlingly
aayaa jo mere mehke labon par
pehle milan ka fasaana
sharmaa ke mein ne aanchal sambhaala
lehraa gayaa dil deewaana
tanhaaiyon mein bhi tum ho gaye saath mere
As the thoughts of our first meeting
Came to my lips
A wave of bashful blushing
Passed through my being
And I gathered my shoulder cloth
Tightly around me
Excitement weaved its way
Through my lively excited heart
And in that loneliness
I suddenly felt you close to me
Song-Main tumhaare khayaalon mein khoi rahi(Kaaghaz Ki Naao)(1975) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Naqsh Llayalpuri, MD-Sapan Jagmohan
Lyrics
main tumhaare khayaalon mein khoi rahi
main tumhaare khayaalon mein khoi rahi
aainaa dekh kar muskuraata rahaa
jaane kya soch kar maine angdaai li
jaane kya soch kar maine angdaai li
aainaa dekh kar muskuraata rahaa
mein tumhaare khayaalon mein khoi rahi
aaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaa
aayaa jo mere

lehraa gayaa dil deewaana
tanhaaiyon mein bhi tum ho gaye saath mere
