Chupke chupke ghoor na mujhko doonga main gaali

By the time 1990s came along Hindi movies were getting loud, the heros were mannerless, ill-bred uncouth fellows. Sadak Chhap Romeos with a heart of gold, diamonds in the rough who start out rather badly, but by the end, redeem themselves by doing the right thing.
Govinda was rather stocky, loud, colourful; He personified the 1990s in Hindi films. He spoke Hindi in the bambaiyya dialect. This Virar-ka-chhokra took the film world by storm. His easy comic sense, his dances, his laid-back ways soon catapulated him to the top spot and his films started hitting the boxoffice sweet-spot with regularity.
I am not a Govinda fan. When he was trending, I was busy raising kids and for a long time did not watch any movie. I did see a lot of his songs on TV (radio had died by then). I liked his steps and the catchy tunes well enough… err… Sometimes.
So why did I dare to burst my eardrums with this song, and nearly get blinded out by the severe colour blocking going on in the dresses of all the dancers and actors in this video?
The reason is Raja Swaminathan, he loves Govinda, today (26 october)is his birthday. On this day, he deserves to read about one of his most favorite songs ever. Raja, Happy Birthday! May all your wishes come true. I hope you enjoy this song.

Ha ha, Ava, here I’ve been building an image of being a connoisseur of classic Hindi songs (and successfully managed to con people so far) – and in one shot, all this effort has gone to waste!!! 🙂
Thanks for this. Now that my fondness for 90s Govinda is out there in front of the entire world, I might as well let people know that I thoroughly enjoyed movies like Coolie No.1 and Saajan Chale Sasuraal. And love songs like “meri marzi” and “stop!” (Gambler), “akhiyon se goli maare”, “kahan Raja Bhoj kahaan Gangu Teli” and songs of Bade Miya Chhote Miya. Love those Govinda-Karishma, Govinda-Raveena dances. 🙂
Now the question is: Will Atul ever let me post on his blog again?
I feel like Nitin Gadkari (or Robert Vadra – without the m-i-law connection) at the moment. Tell me, Ava – are you Arvind Kejriwal in disguise? 😉
Thanks for the birthday greetings. Very nice of you. 🙂

Raja,
🙂 Sorry to burst your bubble, and on your birthday too. But really you should not carry the burden of your ‘good’ taste like this. It is time to come out of the closet and say “I am a Govinda Fan and proud of it.”
🙂 Have a great day. I see Harvey has done a post for you as well. 🙂 Going to read that now.
