When I met Sudhir Jee a few days ago, one of the things that we discussed was the fact that there are so many film personalities that we have discussed and many more that are not yet covered and not yet discussed. How we would like to have a comprehensive list of all the anniversaries of all the film personalities, so that we could discuss their songs on their anniversaries. Once we have our list of anniversary dates ready, we may have our hands full, what with every date of the year most likely having a few anniversaries.

Today (29th july) is the death anniversary of Sudhir Phadke (25 july 1919- 29 july 2002). He got the opportunity to compose in very few Hindi movies, but he has left an indelible mark in the annals of Hindi movie music. Who can forget the immortal song Jyoti kalash chhalke from “Bhaabhi Ki Choodiyaan”. Another timeless classic, viz. Din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai is also his creation.

Before she burst on to the Bollywood scene with C.I.D. (1956) and Pyaasa (1957), Padma Bhushan Waheeda Rehman starred in two movies each in Telugu and Tamil including, as the second heroine, in the D. Yoganand directed Anjali Devi-A. Nageswara Rao starrer 1955 Telugu production Jayasimha. It was later dubbed in Hindi by P. Ramesh Naidu and released as Jai Singh in 1959.

Sandhya Mukherjee is one of the relatively lesser known playback singers of 50s as far as Hindi film industy is concerned. But she has gone on to become one of the top most playback singers of Bengali films. I first came to know about her as a playback singer when I bought a 78 RPM record (No. N. 36794) of the film ‘Sazaa’ (1951) for the iconic song ‘tum na jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye’. The other side of the gramophone record had “aa gupchup gupchup pyaar karen” sung by Sandhya Mukherjee and Hemant Kumar. When I first listened to this song, I felt that I got a bonus song along with the iconic song of the film.

“Bluffmaster” (1963) was produced by Subhash Desai and directed by Manmohan Desai. It had Shammi Kapoor, Saira Bano, Lalita Pawar, Niranjan Sharma, Pran, Mohan Choti, Laxmi Chhaya, TunTun, Rashid Khan, Shyam Lal, Charlie Walker, Jugal Kishore, Anand Joshi, Santhosh Kumar etc in it.
