This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

We have been discussing in this blog scores of songs from lesser known films which are gems but lost out soon after those films failed miserably at the box office. A few among those films even failed to get released. Surely, the producers and financiers of these films must have lost the money they invested. But in the event, the performances of other artists associated with such films went unnoticed. Music Director Vinod was one of such artists who despite the phenomenal success of the film ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949), could not sustain the success for long as most of his subsequent films did not fare well at the box office despite having melodious songs composed by him for those films. Those songs went out of circulation and faded as quickly as the respective films. Thanks to internet, we now have access to those gems to be shared with the lovers of old Hindi film songs.

AAG KA DARIYA (1953) was one such film falling under the category of lesser known films which despite having an impressive star cast and good music, did not become successful at the box office. The film was produced under the banner of Shorey Films and directed by Roop K Shorey. The star cast included Karan Diwan, Meena Shorey, Prithviraj Kapoor, Manju, Shammi, Johny Walker etc. Two songs from this film have already been discussed. Here is the third song ‘chupke se na jaa o man ke raajaa’ sung by Asha Bhonsle. The song is written by Aziz Kashmiri and set to music by Vinod. Only the audio clip is available of this song but my guess is that Asha Bhonsle gives playback for Meena Shorey in this song. The song is composed in a slow tempo with beautiful piano interludes making it a very melodious song. I also like the way Asha Bhonsle has rendered this song.

Incidentally, I find that Vinod had taken Asha Bhonsle as the playback singer for Meena Shorey, the lead actor in this film as well as in ‘Ek Do Teen’ (1953) in which she was the main singer.

Song-Chupke se na jaa o man ke raajaa (Aag Ka Dariya)(1953) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Aziz Kashmiri, MD-Vinod

Lyrics

aaj kaisi hai ke
tumne mujhe barbaad kiyaa
chupke se naa jaa o man ke raajaa
rooth gayaa kyun ye to bataa jaa
chupke se naa jaa o man ke raajaa
rooth gaya kyun ye to bataa jaa

chupke se naa jaa o man ke rajaa
rooth gaya kyun ye to bataa jaa

pehle pahal hamne aankhen milaayin
aankhon se dil ki baaten bataayin
samaj na sakey tum tadpte rahe hum
is kaa hai gham
samaj na sakey tum tadpte rahe hum
is kaa hai gham
kaise mitegaa ye gham to bataa jaa
chupke se naa jaa o man ke raajaa
rooth gayaa kyun ye to bataa jaa
chupke se naa jaa o man ke raajaa
rooth gayaa kyun ye to bataa jaa

sooni padi hai nigaahon ki basti
hamne basaayi hai aahon ki basti
milaa ke nazar kyun kiyaa bekhabar
kiyaa bekhabar
milaa ke nazar kyun kiyaa bekhabar
kiyaa bekhabar
huyi bhool kyaa hamse ye to bataa jaa
chupke se naa jaa o man ke raajaa
rooth gayaa kyun ye to bataa jaa
rooth gayaa kyun ye to bataa jaa

Did Vinod himself play the piano in this song?
