Mera antar ek mandir hai tera

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Under the banner of Navketan ( Navketan Films, Navketan International and Navketan Enterprises), there were many films which have become immortals. Films like ‘Nau Do Gyarah (1957), ‘Kaala Baazar (1960), ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’ (1963), ‘Guide’ (1965) and ‘Jewel Thief’ (1967) have been known for the good story and screen play, good music and fast paced direction from Vijay Anand in particular, the song picturisation in these films. Each of his films germinated from new ideas.

‘Tere Mere Sapne’ (1971) was one such film which was produced under the banner of Navketan Enterprises. Probably Vijay Anand used this banner to distinguish the films produced and directed by him. The film had Dev Anand and Mumtaz in lead roles with Vijay Anand, Sapru, Dulari, Uma Dutt, Agha, Leela Mishra etc in character roles. Premnath and Hema Malini had guest appearances in the film in the roles of a coal mine owner and a film actress, respectively. I had seen this film in the theatre when it was released and I liked it. Those days, I never missed any film made under the banner of Navketan until ‘Heera Panna’ (1973). In addition, I have seen almost all Navketan films of black and white era available on VCDs/DVDs. In my view, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ was an ‘avant garde’ film produced under the banner of Navketan. Unfortunately, the film did not fare well at the box office despite having the best in terms of production values. Hence this film became one of the least succeesful films among the films directed by Vijay Anand. Perhaps the tear jerking moments and the subject of medical ethics portrayed in the film did not appeal to the audience.

The highlights of the film was Mumtaz’s superb performance in the role of the wife of Dr Anand ( Dev Anand) and the melodious songs composed by S D Burman. All songs of this movie were written by Neeraj. Of the 8 songs in the film, 3 songs have been discussed in this blog. I have chosen the fourth song from this film ‘meraa antar ek mandir hai teraa’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This song is nothing less than a sublime poetry with deep meanings. What a lovely thought behind two simple lines of the song (reproduced below) which sums up the wife-husband relationship in the Indian Society.

paake tujhe
apnaa banaake
tujh ko hi lautaa doon

Of course, in modern days, some may not agree with these kind of thoughts.

This is a background song, beautifully rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and well picturised on Mumtaz and Dev Anand. I feel that there was more emotion in Mumtaz’s performance than in Dev Anand’s while the song was played in the background. This is a song which is better to watch on a video clip than to listen on an audio clip.

This song is our tribute to Vijay Anand whose birth day falls on January 22nd. That he was a talented person from a very young age can be gauged by the fact that at the age of 16, he became assistant director in ‘Afsar’ (1950). Due to a sudden illness of Chetan Anand, who directed the film ‘Funtoosh’ (1954), Vijay Anand directed a song ‘hey meri topi phalat ke aa’ in the film at the age of 20. At the age of 23, he scripted and directed a box office hit ‘Nau Do Gyarah’ (1957).
