Aaj miley man ke meet

Posted on: February 7, 2013

“Nawab Sirazudaula” (1967) was a Lok Bharti Chitra Production. It was directed by Ramchandra Thakur. The movie had Bharat Bhushan, Kalpana, Manhar Desai, Moti Sagar, Daisy Irani, B. M. Vyas, Naseem, Johnny Walker, Murad etc in it.

The movie must have sung without a trace, seeing that one hardly finds any mention of this movie while discussing the hit movies of yesteryears.

Failure of the movie was yet another setback for the music of this movie and its music director Madan Mohan (“Shaapit Gandharv” as described so appropriately by someone).

Here is a wonderful song from this movie. This song is sung by Manna Dey. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Madan Mohan, as mentioned earlier.

And what fantastic music ! The sitar music, which dominates this song takes one’s breath away. I am sure this sitar was played by one of the great sita experts of the day. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.

And let us not forget the superb singing of Manna Dey and the great lyrics of Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.

This song is a gem that was unfortunately forgotten because of the failure of the movie. The song deserves to be much better known among music lovers.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Aaj miley man ke meet (Nawab Sirazudaula)(1967) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aaj miley man ke meet
aaj miley man ke meet
ghunghruon ki lay pe aaj
ghunghruon ki lay pe aaj
naachne lagi hai preet
aaj miley man ke meet
aaj miley man ke meet

chandrmaa sa gora badan
jhilmilaaye jaise kiran
chandramaa sa gora badan
jhilmilaaye jaise kiran
choom rahaa unke charan
jhoom jhoom ke sangeet
aaj miley man ke meet
aaj miley man ke meet

unki preet unki lagan
aa aa aa aa
unki preet unki lagan
lipat gayi jaise agan
unki preet unki lagan
lipat gayi jaise agan
man mein mere aan base
man mein mere aan base
jaise baansuri mein geet
aaj miley man ke meet
aaj miley man ke meet

ankhiyaan ye ban ke chakor
dekhen hai chandaa ki aur
ankhiyaan ye ban ke chakor
dekhen hai chandaa ki aur
saanwali saloni rain
aaj dheere dheere beet
aaj mile man ke meet
aaj mile man ke meet
ghungharoon ki lay pe aaj
ghoongharoon ki lay pe aaj
naachne lagi hai preet
aaj miley man ke meet
aaj miley man ke meet

Atul ji,
Madan Mohan was described as ” Shapit Gandharva” by me in one of the write ups once.
This was the last film in which Nassem Bano (mother of Saira Bano) appeared, before retirement.

Thanks Avinashji for the compliments. Bachpan se leke aaj tak, sitar mera sab se pasandida yantra (instrument) raha hai. I remember I was only may be eight years old when I first heard this instrument, of course on radio and played by Pt. Ravi Shankar. We had to totally depend on the radio back then, so whenever I got a chance, I would just sit and listen. After few years, I got familiar with two other sitarists, Ustad Vilayat Khan and Nikhil Banerjee (died at the age of 54). There was a time when I preferred Vilayat Khan’s style better than other two. Sarod is my other fav instrument.
So, you do know how to play sitar. I learned only for few months and could not continue due to marriage (Pehle dukh hua, lekin socha koi baat nahin. Bhagwan ne shayad kisi aur ka band bajaa ne ka mauka de diya 😆 ) You are lucky that you are under the guidance of a Guruji. 🙂
BTW, other two of many songs with this instrument are-
aap ki baaten karen ya apna afsaana kahen

Both songs are from Dil Ki Raahen-73, MD Madan Mohan. During his high time, MM has always used sitar in his songs.

In all probability the Sitar is played by Ut Rais Khan.
