Ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar

I have so far seen three films produced and directed by Roop Kishore Shorey – ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949), ‘ Dholak’ (1951) and ‘Ek Do Teen’ (1953) and I relished them wholeheartedly. He was known in his hay days as ‘King of Comedy’ as most of his films were based on light situational comedies. There was no gaudiness in his comedy films as the comedy emanated from a ‘self goal’ that is, the characters in his films laughed on themselves rather than taking pleasure in laughing on others.

Roop K Shorey produced and directed at least a dozen films during the pre-partition days but post partition, he and his team shifted the base from Lahore to Bombay (Mumbai) almost as a pauper as his studio in Lahore was burnt. However, being an enterprising person, he regrouped his team and produced and directed under the banner of Shorey Films ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949) with Motilal and Meena Shorey in the lead roles and Majnu (real name Harold Lewis), his childhood friend. Aziz Kashmiri and Vinod as lyricist and music director respectively were his other teammates. The film was a box office success giving Meena Shorey an important break as a lead actress. Subsequently, he produced and directed films like ‘Mukhda’ (1951), ‘Dholak’ (1951), ‘Aag Ka Dariya’ (1953) but these films did not bring him as much success as he expected. So he thought of repeating the situational comedy dose of his most successful film ‘ Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949) in his new venture ‘Ek Do Teen’ (1953) with his successful lead pair of Motilal and Meena Shorey, his ‘mascot’ Majnu and the successful musical pair of Aziz Kashmiri and Vinod. Unfortunately for Roop K Shorey, the film did not click at the box office.

As I said earlier, I have seen ‘Ek Do Teen’ and in my view, the film was not bad at all. It had a good story and all the songs were beautifully composed by Vinod though they may not be as popular as that of ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’. Perhaps the taste of the audience had changed during those 4 years, with films like ‘Baazi’ (1951), ‘Aawara’ (1951), ‘Aan’ (1952) in which the new set of lead actors like Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar were much more preferred over the older looking Motilal and Karan Deewan. Even the musical taste of the audience had undergone a change with the success of Shankar-Jaikishan as music director. The successive failure of his films put so much pressure on Roop K Shorey both in business and personal fronts that he and Meena Shorey, his wife migrated to Pakistan, seeking greener pastures in the Pakistan Film Industry. The end result was that while Roop Shorey returned to India, his wife stayed back in Pakistan banking on the adulation she received there thus ending his marriage with her.

I have chosen for discussion the title song ‘ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar’ from EK DO TEEN (1953) sung by Asha Bhonsle. One can notice the similarities in genre of this song with ‘laara lappa’ song of ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949). Both the songs have been picturised on the office setting and secondly the word ‘laare’ (meaning excuse or false promise) has been used in this song as well. However, ‘laara lappa’ song had set such a high standard of composition, singing and picturisation that ‘ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar’ did not reach that level of popularity even though this song is hummable. In the ‘laara lappa’ song, the office set canvass was relatively larger giving flexibility to cameraman to picturise the song with a choice of multiple placements of the camera. In ‘ek do teen’ song, unfortunately due to limitation of the shooting space, confined only around the office table, the picturisation of the entire song seems to have been done with camera placed in a fixed place and taking wide angle shots most of the time except for a couple of close up shots of Meena Shorey and Motilal for their expressions. Hence the picturisation of this song did not match in visual presentation with that of ‘laara lappa’ song.

Nonetheless, it is a peppy song and I like it.

Incidentally, in ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949), out of 10 songs in the film, Lata Mangeshkar sang 6 songs – solo as well as with other singers. In ‘Ek Do Teen’ (1953), Lata Mangeshkar did not sing any of the 9 songs in the film. In fact, Asha Bhonsle sang as many as 8 songs in this film.

Song-Ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar (Ek Do Teen)(1953) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Aziz Kashmiri, MD-Vinod

Lyrics

kar raha hai muqaddar ishaara hamen
tere laaron ne rakha kanwaara hamen
ek do teen
ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar
piyaa ji ne laare hamen diye hain hazaar
ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar
piyaa ji ne laare hamen diye hain hazaar

bholi bhaali sooraten dil mein kadurten
bholi bhaali sooraten dil mein kadurten
hamen to ye jaante hain nanha sa shikaar
hamen to ye jaante hain nanha sa shikaar
is liye karten hain roz ched chaad
piyaa ji ne laare hamen diye hain hazaar
ek do teen
ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar
piyaa ji ne laare hamen diye hain hazaar
ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar
piyaa ji ne hamen laare diye hain hazaar

milenge jo raste
kahenge namaste
ho namaste ji namaste
milenge jo raaste
kahenge namaste
ho namaste ji namaste
jaan na pehchaan main teraa mehmaan
jaan na pehchaan main teraa mehmaan
aisi hi sharaaraton pe aati hai jikhar
piyaa ji ne hamen laare diye hain hazaar
ek do teen
ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar
piyaa ji ne laare hamen diye hain hazaar
ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar
piyaa ji ne laare hamen diye hain hazaar

dekhiye huzoor meri anhkhiyon ke noor
raho door door ye main kahoongi zaroor
dekhiye huzoor meri anhkhiyon ke noor
raho door door ye main kahoongi zaroor
lagegi na teri meri naav kabhi paar
suni nahin toone mere dil ki pukaar
lagegi na teri meri naav kabhi paar
suni nahin toone mere dil ki pukaar
ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar
piyaa ji ne laare hamen diye hain hazaar
ek do teen
ek do teen ho to karoon aitbaar
piyaa ji ne laare hamen diye hain hazaar
ek do teen ho to karo aitbaar
piyaa ji ne laare hamen diye hain hazaar

Nice article, good information about Roop and Meena Shaurie. Both Shauries had good sense of humour, I would say in Hindi cinema, they were the ones who started Rom-com.
But alas taste of people had changed, people preferred tragedy of Dilip Kumar, light and romantic music of SJ and flirtation of Devanand.
It was very tragic to know about Meena, in that era I wasn’t born, but Shauries always intrigued me. Shauries team was unfortunate, music director Vinod had differences with Lata, she refused to sing for him and preferred MD like c Ramchandra, husnlal bhagatram, Naushad.
Aziz Kashmiri lyrisct couldn’t make place for himself, but overall Shauries made good movies.
We owe a lot to them. Thanks for article.
