Is dil se teri yaad bhulaayi nahin jaati

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
Recently, I listened to a song ‘is dil se teri yaad bhulaayi nahi jaati’ on YT sung by Mohammed Rafi. The song sounded familiar to me. My first impression was that this song was from an old film. But the uploader of the audio clip mentioned that it was a NFS composed by Hansraj Bahl. I never knew that Mohammed Rafi had sung any NFS under the baton of Hansraj Bahl. One of the regulars on YT whom I consider to be fairly reliable has mentioned that this song was written by Rajinder Krishan as he had heard his name being mentioned by the announcer on Radio Ceylon while playing this song. Since the composition as well as rendition of this song gave me an impression of a filmy song, I searched for other audio clips of the same song and got my hand on an audio clip where the uploader had claimed that the song was from the film ‘Kaneez’ (1949). The film had two music director – Ghulam Haider and Hansraj Bahl and the song was accredited by the uploader to Ghulam Haider-Hansraj Bahl.
There is no mention of this song in http://www.myswar.com under the film ‘Kaneez’. Nor does this song appear in the list of http://www.earthmusic.net . I have no idea whether this song is listed in HFGK. This song is not listed as NFS in a couple of websites created by Rafi fans. Further browsing through more websites on the subject gave a divided outcome with some claiming this song to be from the film and other claiming it to be a NFS.
‘Kaneez’ had in all 12 songs of which only one song was sung by Mohammed Rafi as a duet with S D Batish. G M Durrani sang for the film’s hero Shyam. There were four lyricists for the film but Rajinder Krishan was not one among them. I had also read that Ghulam Haider migrated to Pakistan with his musicians during the making of this film and Hansraj Bahl completed a couple of songs and the background music of the film. I feel that with so much confusion about the status of this song – filmy or non-filmy, there must be a story behind this confusion which I am not aware of. Since the song is not being shown as a part of ‘Kaneez’ (1949) in ‘myswar.com which is regarded as a ‘replica’ of HFGK, this song may be treated as an NFS.
Irrespective of whether the song is a filmy or non-filmy, it is a heart touching song written in a ghazal format. In my view, this song must rank as one of the best songs of Mohammed Rafi. The style of musical composition and the rendition of this song by Mohammed Rafi give an impression that this song was recorded in early 50s.
Song-Is dil se teri yaad bhulaayi nahin jaati (Rafi NFS)(1950) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Hansraj Bahl
Lyrics
is dil se teri yaad bhulaayi nahin jaati
is dil se teri yaad bhulaayi nahin jaati
ye pyaar ki daulat hai
ae ae
ae ae
ae ae aeeee
ye pyaar ki daulat hai lutaayi nahin jaati
is dil se teri yaad bhulaayi nahin jaati
mar mar ke banaayi hai jo tasweer-e-muhabbat
mar mar ke banaayi hai jo tasweer-e-muhabbat
ab apne hi haathon se mitaayi nahin jaati
is dil se teri yaad bhulaayi nahin jaati
le jaayen zamaane mein kahaan dil ki lagi ko
le jaayen zamaane mein kahaan dil ki lagi ko
ashqon se to ye aag bujhaayi nahin jaati
is dil se teri yaad bhulaayi nahin jaati
kis dil se ye kehte ho tumhen dil se bhulaa doon
tumhen dil se bhulaa doon
har roz to ye duniyaa basaayi nahin jaati
is dil se teri yaad bhulaayi nahin jaati
ye pyaar ki daulat hai
ae ae
ae ae
ae ae aeeee
ye pyaar ki daulat hai lutaayi nahin jaati
is dil se teri yaad bhulaayi nahin jaati

Sadanandji,
I just posted the clip of Khaiyyam Saab’s interview that you have mentioned in your write up of the song “Mere geeton ka singaar ho tum…..” FYI

Kamath ji,
My swar does give more or less same information as far as no. of songs and singer’s names, still I found that many times the small notes and extra info which HFGK gives with all films was missing on my swar.
Take this song ,for instance-
HFGK lists this song’ Is dil se teri yaad’ as a part of this film and it is sung by ZEENAT BEGUM,and written by Shatir lucknowi, with music by Ghulam Hyder.
However in the chapter of ‘Version songs’, HFGK does not mention this song as sung by Rafi.
There are 2 possibilities- 1. This song sung by Rafi must have been recorded but removed/not included in the film and 2. this must be a different song altogether.
I guess experts like our Sudhir ji,who has many Record Collector friends in Delhi, would be able to sort out the confusion.

I studied in Delhi and my school( both, Middle & Higher Secondary) started every day at 1 PM. There was a program at( if I remember correctly) Delhi B station, every day, from 11:45 AM to 12Noon, called ‘Gair Filmi Naghmein'( or Geet). I have heard “Is Dil Se Teri Yaad…….”, in that program. I was only 12 or 13 at the time and did not care much about private songs of Kamla Jhariya, C H Atma, etc. I loved Rafi’s song ” Is Dil Se Teri…” so much, that whenever the announcer would say “Agla naghma/Geet Mohamad Rafi ka Gaya hai”& if she said ” aur geetkaar hain Rajendra Krishn(actually Rajinder Krishan)”, I used to go closer to the radio. This is why, I can say this is a private album.
As far as “this is from the film Kaneez is concerned, in the film “Do Raste”, Balraj Sahni plays the KL Saigal song, “IK BANGLA BANE NYAARA”. Someone can label it as “this song is from “Do Raste”, whereas, we know it is from the film “President”.

Sadanand ji,
First, I must thank you a ton, for continuously brining on this blog, some very wonderful gems that have been waiting for their place. I have been reading your posts and savoring the songs you have been writing about. It is a real treat. This particular song is one of those that have been with me since the radio listening days; this and also specifically the one mentioned by Khyati ji, are perenial favorites.
Sadanand ji, Arun ji, Atul ji
Now coming to the pedigree of this song. This particular song has nothing to do whatsoever with the film ‘Kaneez’ (1949). Arun ji has correctly pointed out that there is a song with similar words, sung by Zeenat Begum. But the words of that song are altogether and completely different, except that there is one part of one line that is common – ‘is dil se teri yaad’.
The initial lines of the song from Kaneez are as follows
O bhoolne waale
O bhoolne waale
Is dil se teri yaad koi kaise nikaale
Is dil se teri yaad koi kaise nikaale
O bhoolne waale
O bhoolne waale. . .
And I assure you that the rest of the anataraas in the two songs are wholly different. And hence no reason for this song to appear even as a version song in the Geet Kosh.
And so we can discount the music director to be Hansraj Bahl, since the only connection being tried to establish is the film Kaneez.
I called up my collector friend just now. He has the original record but he is not at home at this time, and will be able to provide more information only by tomorrow. He however is able to recall off hand that on the record, the name of the music director is not given. Only the name of the lyricist is given. He mentioned two more items of information for this song. One that he may have read somewhere that the music of this ghazal is composed by Rafi Sb himself. Also, that the popularity of this record resulted in it being recorded and published more than once. But all this he will be able to say more certainly only tomorrow after checking. Hopefully I shall bring an update then.
Then I also checked the list of Rafi Sb’s songs compiled by Muveen (this list is available online and is the one that Nahm ji has shared with us). Even in this list, this particular song is listed as belonging to film Kaneez. But that is not right.
However, the same list also includes this ghazal later in the list of non film songs of Rafi Sb. In that section, only the lyricist is indicated as Rajinder Krishan, with no entry for the music director.
Once again, it shows how much misinformation is available online and it is being perpetuated by folks who just do a copy, without spending any effort to check the authenticity of the information.
Rgds

As I recollect, once upon time I was having this HMV record with me,and Music Director’s name was not there,I suppose.Writer is Rajinder Krishn which is mentioned on record.BUT by listening song and instruments used in this song very very clearlly indicates that same instruments are used by Hansraj bahel ,in CHUNARIYA,sab kuchh lutaya humne aakar teri galli mein,[Rafi, mrbhakri.]There is crystal clear evidence ,music is by HANSRAJ BAHEL only.Rafi has adopted SAME STYLE in later recorded song is dil se……Listen both songs at a time.

Sir,
I had sent the lyrics of this ghazal sometime back , under the impression that this is from the film ‘Kaneez’. Atulji wisely did not post it. I wondered for a while what happened to it, than forgot about it.
Filmy or non-filmy, this is a classy ghazal with a genuine Rafi touch.
Regards.

Sudhir Sir,
Is there any update about the composer of this ghazal ? If this is indeed composed by Rafi sahab himself, than there may be other songs composed by him.
Regards.

Sadanandji,
Thanks for this gem of Rafi Saab. This is one of my brother’s fav. He had this in his audio cassette. Though, a big lover of his NFS bhajans, specially by Khaiyyam and Madhukar Rajasthani, at that time, I was not into this kind of songs, so did not listen heartily. The first ghazal/NFS that I loved was “Ghazab kiya tere waade pe aitbaar kiya….” (Still needs to find place in this blog) Then there is no looking back for me. I may not be familiar with all his ghazals/NFS, but still love the way he has rendered all these gems. Why only these gems, I may say all gems. BTW, Ghazab kiya…..ghazal is in the “Legends- Mohammad Rafi” Vol 2, song 1 with Jagjit Singh’s speech in the beginning. Just FYI. Here is the clip. The clip mentions this as a unreleased song from BIWI, whereas the CD says NFS. Anyone has more info/clarification, please?
