Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Main tulsi tere aangan ki

Posted on: August 2, 2011

I can guess the reactions of most readers of this blog on reading the title of this post. It will be along the lines of- ‘What ! This song was not yet discussed in this blog ! And you call yourself a Hindi movies song blog ! etc etc. 😀

Well, I have very much lived through the age when this movie and this song came into existence. Those were the days when I had gone into college and acquired independence from parental supervision which I misused to the hilt by bunking college classes and watching movies. I would read a Hindi weekly magazine called ‘Saptahik Hindustan” which would carry reviews of newly released movie. The opinion of the movie reviewer called Ishwar Sing Bais shaped my opinion of the movies. He panned most Amitabh Bachcahn movies and as a result I disliked those movies. He described “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” as an obscene movie, so I disliked the movie and did not watch that.

The reviewere liked “Main Tulsi Tere Aangan ki” and praised it sky high, so it was but natural for me to bunk my college for the worthwhile cause of watching this movie. And watched this movie and liked it.

The song in question was all over the movie, which is natural, seeing that it is the theme song as well as the title song. Asha Paresh, a long term favourite of Raj Khosla, was persuaded back from her retirement to play the title role. In this movie, she has a son (Vinod Khanna) from Vijay Anand as a result of a pre marital alliance. Vijay Anand, on the other hand gets married to Nutan (another actress who also came back from retirement to play this role). It was the first time when I watched Asha Parekh and Nutan in a movie. Before that, I had only heard their names.

The song has the ideal stuff to keep audience (mainly sensitive womenfolk and some sensitivemenfolk0-like yours truly) coming back to the movie halls in droves.

The movie was a big success and its songs were a rage. And this title song was undoubtedly the most popular song of them all.

Here is this song, which is sung by Lata and it is lip synced by Asha Parekh. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. the song was hugely popular and continues to be so even today. And I am happy that this song has finally taken its rightful place in the blog. 😀

Song-Main tulsi tere aangan ki (Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki) (1978) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

sab kuchh teraa, kuchh nahin meraa
maang teri, sindoor bhi teraa
sab kuchh teraa, kuchh nahin meraa

kaahe ko tu mujhse jalti hai
kaahe ko tu mujhse jalti hai
ae ri mohe to tu lagti hai
koi saheli bachpan ki
main tulsi tere aangan ki
