Ghadi ghadi poochho na jee

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Anil Biswas seemed to be one of the most admired personalities among the Hindi film actors, singers and poets. It was said that his house used to be full of film personalities most of the time.He stayed in Dadar At that time which was a central point for visiting most of the studios such as Ranjit Studios, Famous Studios, Sri Sound Studios, Jyoti Studios etc. Some times I feel that his house was used for what is called in today’s parlance as a ‘networking’ place. As it was often said, music directors those days held each other in high esteem and did not mind sharing information of mutual interest. I think that in the initial stage of Lata Mangeshkar’s career, apart from her beautiful voice, Anil Biswas had a major share in shaping her playback singing career along with Master Ghulam Haider. Apart from grooming her in attaining perfection in playback singing, he introduced her to Raj Kapoor for songs in ‘Barsaat’ (1949) which was her first collaboration with Raj Kapoor. He may have probably introduced her to some more producers and music directors in the late 40s.

Lata Mangeshkar sang under the baton of Anil Biswas for the first time in ‘Anokha Pyaar’ (1948). She gave playback for Nalini Jaywant in the movie while Meena Kapoor sang for Nargis. However when the time came for recording the songs for disc version, Meena Kapoor was unwell. So Lata Mangeshkar ended up with recording the disc version of all the songs sung by Meena Kapoor in film version. So Lata Mangeshkar had as many as 10 songs recorded on the discs, a splendid beginning of her collaboration with Anil Biswas.

ANOKHA PYAAR (1948) had 11 songs including the multiple version songs out of which 9 songs (including multiple version songs) have already been discussed in this blog. The 10th song from this film for discussion is ‘ghadi ghadi poochho na jee’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar and picturised on Nalini Jaywant. The song was written by Gopal Singh Nepali and set to music by Anil Biswas. The film is a love triangle in which Dilip Kumar is in love with Nargis while Nalini Jaywant, the flower girl is in love with Dilip Kumar. The background to this song is that after recuperating from his injuries in the house of Nargis’ father who is a doctor, Dilip Kumar is about to leave the house which makes Nargis sad. But for Nalini Jaywant, it is a happy occasion as she would be meeting Dilip Kumar after a long time. The lyrics of the song are exuberant to reflect her happiness while she is in process of making a bouquet of flowers to be given to Dilip Kumar personally by her upon his arrival.

The video link misses one or two words of the lyrics in a couple of places . So audio link with complete lyrics has also been given.

Jyoti Studio by the way was near Grant Road.

Jyoti Studio to Dadar is 15 minutes by train. Those days due to less traffic congestion, one could reach Dadar from Grant Road by taxi within 15 minutes.

Kamath ji,
A very good write up as usual.
The film had a total of 10 songs. One was a Mukesh solo-“Jeevan sapna toot gaya” (Mukesh version. There is a separate Lata version also).
Out of the balance 9 songs Lata already had 4 songs of her own ,sung by her on the screen and on the records.
The remaining 5 songs were to be recorded in the voice of meena kapoor(they were her songs on the screen also),but due to health problems, she could not come and these additional 5 songs were recorded by Lata,as a help to Anil Biswas.
Thus Lata had 9 out 10 songs in the film.
By the way Anil Biswas never forgave Lata for NOT including any of his songs in the List Lata made of her favourite songs on her Silver jubilee celebrations.there was no song by C.Ramchandra also !
